Working With Vintage Pieces in Your Home

They say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And while this familiar adage is usually applied to humans, it’s one that can also be applied to things, like home decor. After all, what you find attractive isn’t necessarily considered attractive to someone else.

Take vintage decor.

In a nutshell, vintage decor is old and imperfect, worn out and faded. To some, that’s all they see. But to others who look at it through a different eye, there’s beauty.

See? In the eye of the beholder.

If you’re one of those who happens to love all things vintage, then this blog is for you. Today, we’re going to talk a bit about how you can incorporate vintage decor into your home for a stylish look that’s anything but antiquated.

Start Small

Even if you really enjoy vintage furnishings, it’s a good idea to start small. Sometimes, when we are so into something, we do too much too fast. And that’s exactly what you don’t want to do with vintage decor. If you are just starting out, visit your local antique or thrift store to find a few items you really love. Oftentimes, it only takes a couple of accessories to add charm and character to a space.

If something bigger comes along that catches your eye, like a cabinet, side table, or light fixture, add it into the mix. The goal is to layer in carefully-selected pieces as you go rather than fill it up with random finds.

Keep it Neutral

Color can be a wonderful thing, but the wrong colors might keep your vintage finds from shining. Vintage pieces are casual chic and calming, which means they often look better when surrounded by soothing neutrals. Dark colors are certainly beautiful, but when it comes to vintage furnishings, opt for gray, light blues, and cream tones.

Think Outside the Box

When it comes to vintage items, thinking outside the box is encouraged. It’s okay to reach for those unconventional items most people wouldn’t even give a second glance. Like porch railings, or doors, and even windows. Normally, castaways such as these are just that— castaways. But in the vintage world, these things can be the perfect addition to your decor.

Learn the Difference

Vintage does not equate junk— and if you wish to become a vintage rockstar, you must learn the difference. Granted, there are many pieces that are worth breathing new life into, but it’s important that you learn where to draw the line. The faster you develop the eye for finding the right pieces, the better off you’ll be.
