Color is a beautiful thing, and although many homeowners want to put more of it into their home, most are too afraid to do it. There seems to be an endless amount of color out there, so it’s understandable that the task of incorporating more of it into a home’s decor can be intimidating. Surprisingly, it’s much easier to do than people realize:
The 80/20 Rule
It’s extremely important to remember that a little color goes a long way. Don’t feel as though you have to saturate the space in color to make a statement. In fact, you can make have greater impact by adhering to the 80/20 rule. The 80/20 rule simply means this: keep 80% of the space neutral and let color fill up the remaining 20%. Not only will 20% stretch to give you a nice amount of color, it’ll do so without leaving you or the room overwhelmed. Furthermore, that 20% of color will help make your neutrals come alive as well.
Start Small
A great place to start divvying up your 20% is through upholstery and window treatments. When it comes to upholstery, stick with one large piece of furniture like a sofa, two smaller pieces such as a pair of accent chairs, or something to the effect of one chair and matching ottoman. You get the idea. While this alone will add the perfect amount of color to a space, you still have room to scatter some small, colorful accents throughout the room.
If you prefer to keep the furniture neutral, let window treatments bring life into the space. With a neutral palette, the options for dressing up your windows are endless. Subtle or bold, smooth or textured, solid or patterned it doesn’t matter you can liven up the room just by adding window treatments. To complete the look, find some throw pillows that will complement the treatments and add them to your neutral furniture.
As you get more comfortable with color, you can start to branch out. Some other great ways to incorporate more color into your space are through pillows, throw blankets, lamps, lampshades, rugs and accent walls. Before you know it, you won’t be nearly as intimidated by color again.
