Textiles and the Modern Farmhouse

Next to shiplap and rustic wood, what comes to mind when you think about farmhouse design style? For me, it’s textiles. But what is a textile anyway and why are they so important in decorating a modern farmhouse interior?

To answer the first question, a textile is a type of cloth or woven fabric. This would include items such as upholstery, window treatments, throw pillows, area rugs, and linens. All design styles can benefit from textiles, but there are some, however, that can benefit from them even more–and farmhouse style is one of them. Why? Because without textiles in a farmhouse interior, the home would appear stark and cold. It’s the use of textiles that brings the comfort and warmth to the surface, making the home feel warm and inviting.

If you’re familiar with Joanna Gaines, star of HGTV’s Fixer Upper and Magnolia businesswoman, then you’re familiar with her use of textiles. Let’s talk a bit about each type and how to use them.

Upholstery

Upholstery in farmhouse design style should look clean yet inviting. A good way to achieve this is to stick with muted, neutral fabric. It doesn’t matter if you choose a solid or a pattern, just keep the palette monochromatic. Slipcovers are also a great option if you want a casual, no-fuss look.

Area Rugs

Area rugs serve a dual purpose: they protect floors and tie a design style together. Rugs are your chance to incorporate an extra layer of color and texture within the interior of your modern farmhouse home. Joanna happens to be a big fan of rugs and we are too. So much in fact, that we now carry the Joanna Gaines collection of rugs for our customers. Be sure to stop in or shop online to find a favorite!

Throw Pillows

What easier way to layer on the comfort than with throw pillows? Again, muted colors will keep your interior cohesive, but that doesn’t mean you have to avoid color altogether. There are times that a pop of color is exactly what you need. This pillow, also from Joanna’s collection, would do the trick, don’t you think?

Window Treatments

Farmhouse style doesn’t always include window treatments, but when it does, they are often simple and casual. Ceiling-to-floor treatments in muted neutrals or simple Roman shades tend to work best. Don’t be afraid to use this as your chance for extra pattern or texture!

Linens

In farmhouse design style, linens typically include bedding and towels. Keep your bedding soft and casual, and your towels white and plush. It’s simple yet elegant, which is what this design style is all about.

If you’re just starting out, add the textiles in gradually. Be selective and make sure your choices blend in with the rest of the interior’s environment. As you perfect your use of textiles you will be able to turn your modern farmhouse dream into a reality.
