Here we are with summer on the fast track to winding down. You might think it’s too premature to focus on the holidays, but really, it’s not — especially if your home isn’t ready for them. School is back in session, so there’s that. Before you know it, Thanksgiving will be here, then Christmas, New Years…
You get the idea.
The thing is, depending on what the holidays look like in your home, you could need anywhere from 2 days to 2 months (or more) to prepare accordingly. If you have a home reno project on your wishlist, you’re already probably too late to get it accomplished unless it’s something fairly minor. The point is that it’s really never too early to have holiday prep on your mind whether you’re making some major home transformations or simply changing out seasonal decor items.
Instead of feeling rushed this year, make a point to carve out some time to meditate on the things your home needs. Some potential projects that may be on your wishlist could include:
- New kitchen
- Updated appliances
- Guest bedroom refresh
- Powder room remodel
- Outdoor living area upgrade/expansion
- Adding a wet bar or beverage station
- Finishing the basement
- Organizing closets/storage areas
- Living and dining furniture update (buy new pieces, reupholster, etc.)
Why Start Now?
Well, as mentioned earlier, it can take up to several weeks for a project to get done. If you’re planning to work with an interior designer or an interior decorator, keep in mind that their schedules can fill up incredibly quickly as the end of the year draws nearer.
If you’re working on a DIY project, you’ll still want to make sure your deadline isn’t pushed up right against the time you’ll need to cook, clean, rest, or whatever else before family arrives. And, if your project involves custom items — furniture, drapes, pillows, etc. — it’s important to start getting those orders in right away unless you have no set deadline for them.
Quick Holiday Decor Fixes
The good news is that if you don’t have a project, big or small, it doesn’t take much to get your home holiday-ready. Seriously! In fact, it’s pretty easy to create an abundance of cheer with these quick seasonal decor fixes. Here are a few tips to help you out:
Use what you already have
Create a unique color palette by using what you’ve got right there at home. There’s no rule that says the only colors you can use are ones that have been coined as “holiday colors.” Have you checked out the last few Pantone autumn/winter color palettes? Just by looking at them, it’s easy to see that there are plenty of other colors suitable for both holiday events and year-round living.
Add personal touches with fabrics
Incorporating new fabrics into your home can be a game-changer no matter what time of year. With that said, they can be especially fun to sprinkle seasonal or holiday-themed fabrics into the mix when. If you’re handy with a needle and thread, consider sewing up a festive pillow cover. Or, simply cut out shapes of pumpkins, leaves, snowflakes, birds, angels, or whatever else will reflect the current holiday and place them throughout the house. They could be used to decorate a tabletop or a mantle. You could even nestle them into a tree or wreath. For outdoor use, opt for felt or something synthetic — both are durable enough to withstand the cold elements.
Focus on greenery and florals
You can never go wrong with greenery and florals. If you already have a wide variety of houseplants, great! But, since the goal is to bring some holiday style into your home, don’t skimp on seasonal greenery and florals. Garlands can be found for any season — just visit your local craft or fabric store and you’ll see. The same can be said for wreaths and stem flowers. The good news is that faux items can be tucked away and reused year after year.
Bring in some accessories that shine
Surfaces that catch the light will easily add sparkle to the room. How you bring in the sparkle is up to you. It could be as simple as filling a decorative bowl with glittery balls to something more complex like adding a mirrored side table to the space.
