There are a variety of reasons why our furniture may reach a point where it needs an update, or simply, some added protection. This doesn’t mean you should replace it with something new. Instead, say “yes” to slipcovers! Many moons ago, most people would just toss a sheet over a piece of furniture and call it done. But today, sheets are out and slipcovers are in.
The slipcovers we have access to today are designed to make a statement in a home. So much in fact that many people opt for slipcovers simply because they can generate a whole new look without requiring new furniture. Let’s take a closer look at slipcovers, including the pros and cons, what your options are, and where they can be used.
Pros and Cons
Before any purchase, it’s always best to weigh the pros and cons. Knowing what the benefits and drawbacks are can help you make a better choice for your home.
Slipcover pros:
- Protection. Slipcovers can protect a piece of furniture you’d like to preserve.
- Easy to clean. Because they can be easily removed, slipcovers can be tossed in the washer whenever it’s needed.
- Versatility. A slipcover means you have the option to change the look of your space whenever you want.
Slipcover cons:
- Style. Unless your slipcover is somewhat tailored, the looseness of it may take away from the lines of your furniture.
- Fit. Tailored slipcovers take less work than ready-made slipcovers to get on and off. A large fit can be frustrating for someone who needs to launder their slipcovers often.
- Wrinkling. If your slipcover isn’t tightened up enough, it can be prone to wrinkling.
Types of Slipcovers
There are three options you have when it comes to slipcovers: ready-made, semi-custom, and custom.
Ready-made slipcovers can be looked at as a one-size-fits-all design. They have no defined shape and basically, need to be tucked in so they can fit. In most cases, ready-made slipcovers are machine washable. These can be found just about anywhere, including higher-end retailers such as Pottery Barn, SureFit, and Macy’s, as well as your everyday stores like Target and Wal-Mart.
Semi-custom slipcovers are a mix of ready-made and custom. You take measurements of your furniture at home and then submit them to a slipcover manufacturer who will then produce a slipcover that fits your piece(s) of furniture. This option means less maintenance of pinning and tucking.
Custom slipcovers cost a bit more, but you get exactly what you want. With custom made, you have the opportunity to pick the fabric, color, and pattern that appeals to you and your space. Furthermore, a professional will measure your piece(s) so it will be tailored specifically to your furniture, giving you a beautiful fit. This option gives you more of an upholstered look than the other two options. The right fit makes more difference than you realize, so don’t rule out custom fit too quickly. It will be an investment, but in the end, you’ll be very happy with it.
Best Fabric Options
When it comes to fabric choices, think of a slipcover in the same way you would if you were buying a new piece of furniture. Some things to take into consideration would be:
- How it will be used
- Where it will be located
- Ease of cleaning
- Its purpose (is it for design, protection or both?)
Some great fabrics to choose from are cotton, twill, denim, faux silk, polyester, or a blend. For high traffic areas, take color and pattern into consideration. Darker colors and small patterns are great for camouflaging dirt and stains. If possible, consult a professional when choosing fabric for your slipcover. This will ensure you end up with a fabric that suits your family’s needs and coincides with how much work you’re willing to put in to maintain it.
Where to Use Them
Pretty much anything can be slipcovered. Sofas are often the most popular pieces to be covered, however, pieces such as loveseats, benches, ottomans, chairs, headboards, footstools, console tables, and even lampshades are covered as well. Recliners can be tricky, but custom fit covers are not unheard of. In all honesty, it really depends on what furniture could use an update or some added protection. For example, a simple tie-on slipcover may be just what you need for that ottoman in the family room. Not only would it protect the table from heavy use, it would also give you the ability to hide those family board games, or whatever else needs to be stored, underneath without being seen.
