Pillow Projects for Your Home

If you’re looking for a DIY project, consider trying your hand at pillows. Throw pillows are often used in home decor, but often times, it can be hard to find exactly what you’re looking for. Instead of settling, get what you want by making adjustments on your own. Here are some ideas for easy pillow projects.

Edged Pillows

Simple pillows can be nice, but if you want to add a bit of extra flair, give them an edge with borders of silk cording or fringe. If you’re up to it, take it a little further by adding an elegant iron-on design to the front. Not only will it look great, it’ll be easy to do.

Fabric Overlay Pillows

An inexpensive way to dress up your pillows is by adding a fabric overlay to the front of it. All you need to do is cut a fabric square and stick in place with fusible web. Pick some decorative trim to cover the raw edges and affix it with fabric glue.

Old Sweater Pillows

Instead of tossing out old sweaters, use them to make throw pillows. Just cut the sweater straight across under the sleeves, measure the width and then head to the fabric store for a pillow form that will fit. Sew your seams, and you’re good to go! For something a little different, sew ribbons onto one end for bow closings, rather than stitching it closed all the way.

Painted Pillow

Yes, you can add paint to a pillow! The best way is to remove the pillow form, adhere a stencil of a design you love and then add your paint. Once the paint dries, you can add finishing touches such as decorative rhinestones, sequins or craft gems. Removing the pillow form may require some unstitching and re-stitching, unless your pillow color is removable, but it’ll be worth it to get a beautifully unique accent.

Felt Design Pillows

Felt is so versatile that it can even be used on pillows. A plain fabric pillow can easily be transformed by adding felt cutouts to it. Intricate cutouts might need to be sewn on, but simpler designs might only need some fabric glue to keep it in place.

Banded Pillows

This is by far one of the easiest ways to jazz up a throw pillow. Pick a coordinating fabric color, measure the pillow, and then create a band that will slide up around it. It’s quick to do and looks great. Want to be a bit more daring? Dye a band of color onto the fabric. The look is casual, which gives your space a very inviting feel.
