Getting Your Home Ready for Spring

If you’re tired of the winter blues, it might be time to start thinking about transitioning the interior and exterior of your home to look a bit more spring-like. Getting a home ready for spring doesn’t actually take a lot of effort or a lot of money. In fact, sometimes all it takes is a good cleaning and a small change or update to transform the space. Let’s take a look at some relatively quick and easy ways you can make your home a bit more reflective of the season to come.

1) Ditch all unnecessary clutter.

Clutter doesn’t make a space look cozy–it makes a space look crowded, and crowded is anything but airy. If you are in fact looking for your space to have the airy feel of spring, take some time to declutter. If you have the room to add extra storage, do it. If not, make use with what you have, tucking some items away for another day. If you can’t part with certain things, rotate them out as seasons change rather than keeping it all displayed at once.

2) Freshen up outdoor areas.

Tis the season for outdoor living! To ensure that your home is one all can enjoy, take time to freshen up those areas. Make sure your deck or patio makes a good first impression this season. Freshen up any outdoor furniture by wiping it down and laundering, replacing, or reupholstering cushions. Sweep the floor, lay down a clean rug, pot some flowers, add some accent pillows, set out some candles or lanterns, hang some string lights, and give the front windows a wash. If you’re feeling extra energetic, you could even power wash the exterior or give the door a fresh coat of paint.

3) Lighten up your interior fabrics.

Fabric is an easy way to make seasonal changes, especially if you focus on the small stuff like bedding, window treatments, and throw pillows. Tuck away those heavyweight fabrics, replacing them with lightweight ones such as silk, chiffon, lace, and linen. Be sure to lighten those colors as well, switching out dark-colored fabrics for ones that are cheery and bright. The goal is to opt for fabrics that will complement spring and summer.

4) Create a more seasonal color palette.

Color is a beautiful thing and there are several colors that represent spring well. Find what colors speak to you and swap them out with colors that hold true to winter. It doesn’t matter if you paint something, add accents or reupholster, simply adjusting your color palette to something airy will have a big impact. Not sure what colors to use? Check out Pantone’s seasonal color report, which is full of inspiration.

5) Give interior glass and lights a good cleaning.

As you do your spring cleaning, give extra attention to interior windows, mirrors, and light fixtures. While the first two are more easily remembered, light fixtures tend to get forgotten. Lamps, pendants, sconces, or whatever other lights illuminate your home collect dust and grime throughout the year and cleaning them up can really brighten up the place.

6) Scatter greenery throughout your home.

What better way to embrace the season than by bringing some of the outdoors in? Kick off this year by adorning your home with more greenery. Not only are plants beautiful to look at, but they’re also beneficial to your health. In addition to houseplants, consider creating a succulent display. Succulents make wonderful centerpieces because they’re low maintenance, interesting to look at, and easy to put together. In addition to that, they last indefinitely. All you need are shallow containers and a variety of succulents. If succulents aren’t your thing, try planting wheatgrass instead.

7) Make small changes.

As mentioned earlier, it doesn’t take much to revamp a space for a new season. This spring, start by changing out your wall art for something a little lighter and brighter. Next, attempt to rearrange the furniture in a new way. Perhaps you can turn certain pieces of furniture toward a window or well-lighted area. If your fireplace will be going into retirement for the season, put up a decorative screen or use it to hold a group of pillar candles. If you spend a lot of time in your bedroom, swap out your bedding to something like a floral pattern.

Remember, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to do unless your plan is to make a complete overhaul. A few simple touches are all you really need to surround yourself with all things spring.
