Design Styles Defined: Preppy

There’s something classically American about preppy design style. It’s playful, it’s sophisticated and it’s a style that continues to remain popular. Perhaps it’s because of its nod to family traditions. Or maybe because of the confidence it radiates. Whatever the reason, it’s a style that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. Let’s take a look at what makes this style a classic favorite.

Elements of Preppy Design Style

Here are features that make preppy design style special:

Traditional palettes
Layered patterns (lots of menswear patterns)
Monograms
Classic furnishings
Nautical accents
Vintage accessories
Extra details on fabrics and accessories

Interior

The interior of a preppy home can often be likened to the interior of the local country club or even a Cape Cod vacation home. And while it might seem as though these surroundings might seem stuffy, they are anything but. Within the space you’ll find a fun mix of old and new, topped off with a lot of extra details. Fabric patterns vary in scale creating visual interest. Colors don’t always match but remain within the same color family. Nautical accents are popular but never overdone. Family heirlooms and vintage accessories are displayed in artful ways. Details such as trim (pom-poms, ribbon, etc.) are often found on upholstery, lighting and accents. Flooring is often wood and adorned with authentic oriental rugs. Last, but not least, monograms are a huge part of this style. Monograms can be found on just about everything from accent pillows to bath linens and everything in between.

Furniture

A classic style requires classic furnishings. Preppy design is known to lean toward traditional pieces that stand the test of time that reflect the style itself. Pieces often include Chesterfield leather sofas and club chairs.

Colors

Preppy style favors bold colors. While the main color scheme is known for its iconic pink and green color scheme, there are other colors that make this style stand out: pine green, gold, navy and red, and rich browns are quite popular.

Textures and Patterns

Textures within a preppy space are often brought in through wall coverings and wood furnishings. In regard to patterns, many used appear more masculine. While florals pair beautifully with the ever-classic monogram, manly patterns such as houndstooth, herringbone and tartan, pair just as nicely too. Other patterns that are integral to this design style are stripes, checks and plaid.
