With warm weather come days that give us the opportunity to stop, reflect and enjoy the company of others. Whether it’s Memorial Day, the Fourth of July or Labor Day, gatherings with family and friends give you prime opportunity to display your patriotic pride at home. Here are some ways to use home decor for a seasonal splash of red, white and blue.
1. Deck out your doorway
Curb appeal is a wise move no matter what time of year it is. One way to bring the patriotic spirit into your home, however, is by simply hanging an American flag. While Old Glory is beautiful enough to stand on its own, there’s no reason you can’t add some accents to compliment it (in fact, I heavily suggest that you should). Consider adding patriotic accent pillows to outdoor furniture and potting flowers such as bold, red geraniums.
2. Show pride with pillows
Accent pillows covered in red, white and blue patterns are readily available this time of year, so start stocking up. The great thing about accent pillows is that they can be reused over and over again each year. If you change your pillows frequently, consider investing in custom pillow covers and inserts. This way, you only have to replace the insert if it gets worn or misshapen, rather than the entire pillow. You could even go a step further to find seat cushions that are fitting for the season. It’s a great way to celebrate the holiday without having to do much work.
3. Use patriotic linens
A red, white and blue color scheme can last well after the Fourth of July, so don’t think your efforts to incorporate them into your home are in vain. You don’t have to update the bed in the guest room (although you could), but consider swapping out items such as placemats, tablecloths (or runners) and dishtowels. We have a variety of fabrics that would work beautifully if you’d like to have custom linens made for your home.
4. Alter your serving ware
You may already have nice dishes that fit with the patriotic color scheme, but that doesn’t mean you want to use them every time you entertain. This time of year it’s easy to find plasticware that is perfect for indoor and outdoor use. Pair blue cups with white utensils and red chargers under clear plastic plates. Altering the items you use when entertaining is an easy way to get in line with the holiday spirit.
5. Get colorfully crafty
If you love being crafty, take that love and make some red, white and blue magic for your home. Paint chairs red or a faded denim blue. Decoupage mason jars. Make a patriotic-inspired wreath. Turn an old wood pallet into an American flag. Create artwork. Make a quilt. These are just some of the things you can do when you capitalize on your talent. If you can create, there’s no reason you can’t have patriotic spirit radiating from your space.
The Americana Way
Now, if you feel drawn to the traditional holiday colors and would like to keep them around longer, you may want to look into Americana design style. Americana style is a versatile style rich with casual beauty that can be broken down into the subcategories patriotic, primitive, and farmhouse charm. Sometimes, it may involve a combination of all three. It’s easily adaptable and extremely appealing, making it a design style that works all year round.
Some elements of Americana design style (based on its subcategory) can typically include:
- Stars (or stars and stripes in combination)
- Flags
- Old quilts
- Vintage advertising from WWI and WWII
- American symbols
- Red, white, and blue color combo
- Twig furniture
- Patchwork
- Wooden bowls
- Muddied or faded primary colors
- Sunflowers, gourds, and pumpkins
- Rooster and chicken motifs
- Checked and/or chintz fabrics
- 1940s and 50s decor
- Vintage dishware
- Natural flooring materials
Any of these versions of Americana style are easy to achieve. Second-hand stores, DIY pieces, and objects found in nature can get you on the path to celebrating your patriotism all year long.
