Almost every decorating style benefits from a little touch of bling – shiny metallics that add light, glamour and a touch of luxe. Because of this, metallics have been growing in popularity over the last few years–and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
At one time it was considered faux pas to mix metals. Today, however, blending them into the same ensemble is encouraged. Whether you go big or go small, the right balance of gold, silver, copper, chrome, or brass can create beautiful textures that will make your space look both eclectic and elegant.
Gold
Although gold is a classic metal, it can become gaudy when used in excess. To keep it elegant and cool, be selective with its use. Even when used in small ways, gold can make a big impact, especially if it’s something unexpected or whimsical. For a softer look, try rose gold.
As hot as the metallic trend is right now, nearly every retail source has fabrics, wallpapers, furniture, and accessories touched with gold. You can even shop flea markets and thrift stores for vintage pieces that have a story to tell.
Silver
Silver is timeless, and out of all the metals, it’s probably the easiest to incorporate into a home’s decor. Although it is often understated, it can do beautiful things to a space. The great thing about silver is its versatility. From shiny and polished to muted and burnished, there is a finish that will work in any interior.
Copper
Copper may be a strong and durable metal, but its look is warm and supple. As with silver, copper is versatile and available in a variety of colors and textures. These colors and textures make it possible to work with traditional decor, modern decor, and everything in between.
Chrome
Chrome is a shiny and durable material that doesn’t require much upkeep. And, as long as you don’t overdo it, it can make a great tool when it comes to decorating. Decorating with chrome furniture and accessories is an easy way to add sparkle to your home. To keep it looking gorgeous, rather than gaudy, use color schemes that will offer a simplified background, such as black and white with one accent color, for it to shine. Chrome also works well in color schemes that are based on shades of one color, or with refined palettes of neutrals.
Brass
Unfortunately, it tends to have a bad wrap because of its overuse back in the day. If you think about it, however, overuse can be a problem no matter what metal you use, so there’s no reason to single this metal out. When done right, brass textures add undeniable class and elegance to any room. The next time you feel the urge to add touches of gold throughout your home, consider seeking out vintage brass instead. Not only is it just as stylish as its glamorous counterpart, but it’s also often much more affordable. Have trouble distinguishing between the two? One trick is to look closely at their undertones. Gold tends to look more yellow on the surface, where brass favors brown.
Mixing and Decor Ideas
There are many different ways that metallics can be mixed. It could be something as simple as silver hardware on furniture pieces blended with gold accessories or something bigger a bronze-colored ceiling with shimmery silver throw pillows on the sofa. Even grander yet would be to cover the walls in wallpaper with metallic features.
The key to mixing metals is to find balance. Creating a vignette of accessories or picture frames is a great place to play for beginners. Another way to create balance is by going big with just one metallic color and adding smaller metallic accents.
