Fall is quickly coming to an end, which means that winter is right around the corner. And while the weather may turn frightful, the inside of your home doesn’t have to. In fact, some of the simplest changes can make a home perfect for cozy living during those long winter months. Here are some tips to get you started.

Tip #1: Bring in Rich Fabrics

When it comes to fabric, rich, doesn’t necessarily mean heavyweight. In fact, there are some lightweight fabrics out there that can warm up a space on the frostiest of days. To make the space feel cozy, incorporate fabrics such as organza, wool, cashmere, organdy, velvet and silk.

Tips #2: Add Style Underfoot

An area rug makes a world of difference in any season, but your feet will be extra happy with something warm to walk on. An area rug can even add warmth to a room full of wall-to-wall carpet. From wool to faux fur, your space will look and feel cozier with a rug.

Tip #3: Change the Color Scheme

Put away those pastel colors and focus on brining in deeper colors. Colors in deep shades of red, brown, amber, gold, plum and green are perfect for the season.

Tip #4: Rearrange the Furniture

Sometimes all it takes is a little rearranging to make a space feel cozy. For the winter months, turn a few pieces of furniture away from the window and toward the fireplace, keeping some floor pillows handy. If you have a wide-open space with furniture spread about, try pulling it in a bit to make more intimate seating arrangements.

Tip #5: Accessorize

Accessories are so easy to swap out for holidays and seasons. For winter adding things like extra candles, quilts and accent pillows make a big difference when it comes to warming up a space for winter. While you’re at it, change out some wall art or add a new runner to the dining room table. You can even change out your window treatments for the season.

Tip #6: Create Mood Lighting

Lighting plays a big deal especially when it comes to making a space feel cozy. Adding wall sconces or table lamps are great ways to add soft lighting. If you have an overhead light, consider putting a dimmer on it. Whichever you choose to do, just make sure you don’t forget to keep some candles around.
