Best Window Treatments for Bay Windows

Bay windows can be a great addition to any space. However, because of their shape and size, they can sometimes be hard to dress, causing even the best home decorator to stop in his or her tracks. Additionally, it can be hard for some people to figure out what to put in the area of their bay window. Although challenging, and sometimes overwhelming, it’s not impossible to find the right window treatment for your bay window. Nor, is it impossible to fill the space with something wonderfully stylish.

Before you rush out to buy window treatments, there are some things you need to take into consideration:

  • How many facets need treating? The most common bay windows have three facets, but there are some that have five or more (technically making them bow, rather than a bay, windows). You can find bay window curtain kits that can cover up to five facets, but if you have more, it might be a better solution to purchase treatments individually or even have them custom-made.
  • What is your budget? If you’ve dressed other windows in your home, you are well aware of how fast the cost can go up when purchasing not just the fabric portion of the window treatment, but the hardware as well. And, being that a bay window is a more intricate design, window coverings will usually cost more. Think about how you want your windows to look and then set aside the money over time if that’s what it takes.
  • Where are your windows located? Paying attention to which way your window faces and even the room it is in, will determine the degree of translucency (or lack thereof) needed. For example, if you have neighbors close by, or, if your home faces east to west, you might want a little extra barrier for privacy or temperature control.
  • What is your home’s decor like? A bay window should be dressed in a way to make it a distinct part of the room, but it’s also important to make sure it complements the decor that surrounds it. This will also help determine what fabric will be best in setting the mood (casual, dramatic, etc) for the space. The last thing you need is a gorgeous window to make a grand statement in a bad way. You want it to stand out for sure, just not like a sore thumb.

Having these things figured out beforehand will help in your search for the perfect bay window covering.

Bay Window Treatment Ideas

Roman or roll-up shades

These types of shades are not only stylish but functional as well. Shades frame the windows nicely and come in a variety of fabrics. This allows you to have a neat and clean look, as well as beautiful color and texture.

Valances

Valances do more than just make a room feel open and inviting. They are also an easy way to coordinate other elements of the room. For instance, you can tie the room together by having seat cushions or accent pillows in the same (or similar) color of your valances. If the window is in a room that requires privacy, you can always hang shades behind them, which can be lowered as needed.

Drapery panels

While it is acceptable to use a single layer of drapery panels, bay windows tend to look better with double layers. A layer of sheers allows for privacy, while the other fabric brings in the texture and color. When hanging panels, keep in mind that they are best when hung on the return walls of the bay window.

Doubled-Up Treatment

Want to really maximize style and function? Combine different types of bay window treatments! For instance, a bay window that features both curtains and Roman shades over each individual pane can result in a stylish, layered look.

No Window Treatment

While window coverings can really pull together a design, there are times homeowners just want to let their windows go bare. And that’s okay! Sometimes, the space just needs extra lighting, and leaving your bay windows wide open will allow you to maximize the natural light and view (if the window offers a good one). If you don’t need privacy and you don’t need to control either the temperature or amount of natural light, then going sans window treatments might be what’s best.

Make Your Cozy Bay Window Space Have Purpose

You have a beautifully dressed bay window. Now what? The final step is determining just what you’ll do with that cozy space a bay window has to offer. Do you have to put something there? Absolutely not! Leaving a bay window free of furniture is an easy way to keep the views bright and open with all that natural light pouring in. With that said, there are some really great options (in addition to the window bench mentioned above) should you choose to add something to the space. Let’s take a look at some other ways you can put this extra space to use.

1. Window bench

If you have a bay window located in an area with enough room, a beautiful way to dress it up is by incorporating a window bench. The seating area is functional, while the cushion allows you to bring in pattern, color, and texture. Need extra storage space? Be sure to convert that window seat into hidden storage.

2. A bar cart lounge

If your bay window resides off the living room, consider a stylish bar cart paired with a decorative accent chair. The combo will make you want to curl up and relax with a drink at the end of a long day.

3. Breakfast nook

There’s no better place for a breakfast nook than in front of a kitchen bay window. Since the widow is rounded in shape, opt for a round table that can enhance the architecture.

4. Bedroom seating nook

The bedroom should be a sanctuary. If your bay window is in the master suite and space allows, consider adding an accent chair (or two) next to an end table. It’ll be a great place to relax when you aren’t quite ready to crawl into bed.

5. Window workspace

Like working with a view? A bay window can serve as a great location for a desk if needed. The ample light can make the workload much more enjoyable, especially on nice days!

6. Sofa space

Last, but certainly, not least is simply placing a sofa in the nook of the bay window or in front of it. Whichever you choose, the bay window will make a beautiful backdrop for your seating area.
