how to decorate basement ideas

Basement Decorating

A basement can come in very handy for storage but when finished into a useable and livable space, it can add huge value to your home. Sometimes however, it can be a challenge to think of ways to turn a space often thought of as dark and dingy into something beautiful and functional for those living in the home. With the right light, colors and attention to details, it is more than possible to turn your basement into a space as beautiful as the other rooms in your home. Below you’ll find some tips that will help you get started in the right direction.

Color

As a general rule, it is often best to stick with light and bright colors throughout the basement. This is mainly due to the fact that most basements have limited lighting. Dark colors can sometimes make basements feel more closed in than they already are. Using lighter shades in fabric and on places such as the walls, floor and ceiling, will make the basement appear more spacious. Bright artwork can also be helpful. If you do have sufficient lighting however, darker colors shouldn’t be a problem.

Lighting

Unless you have a walk-in basement or a split-level home, it’s likely that your lighting is minimal. If you don’t have one of the above listed homes, then you’ll need to incorporate lighting into your decorating plan. Ceiling lights are a must, but the height of your ceiling will determine what you can and can’t use (i.e. track lighting vs. recessed, pendants, etc.). For those that do have windows and/or doors that bring in lots of natural light, be sure to use those as ways to bring in more color by way of window treatments. Sheers on the windows are also great ways to provide some privacy without blocking out natural light.

Flooring

When it comes to flooring, the main thing to keep in mind is just how damp basements can get. This is why hardwood floors and wall-to-wall carpet aren’t the best options. Vinyl, laminate and tile are three other great choices that can work very well in a basement. Whichever you choose, continue the flooring throughout the entire space. Different flooring makes the space look disconnected and cluttered, whereas the continuity of the same flooring will make your area look spacious.

 Layout

The layout will depend on the purpose of the space, but whatever you use it for (office, family room, play area, etc), it should be treated like other rooms in your home in regards to things such as traffic flow and conversation areas. Taking these things into consideration are important details that shouldn’t be neglected if you want to have a functional space.
