There’s just something about a rug. Sure, the interior of a home can be beautiful without one, but when it comes to a heightened sense of warmth and beauty, an area rug is where it’s at. A rug can do so many things: soften an echo, define a style, fuel inspiration for decorating, offer comfort, and yes, even transform a space. Let’s cover some ways to get the most out of the rugs in your space.

Show your rug’s class, with glass.

Use a glass coffee table when you find a rug you really love, rather than an opaque one to really show it off. You might think that glass tables only work with modern interiors, but that’s not the case at all. It’s perfectly acceptable to mix glassed furnishings into other interior design styles including traditional and transitional. 

Mix and match patterns for visual impact. 

Don’t shy away from large patterned rugs if they appeal to you. You can always tone it down with solids. Try pairing a geometric patterned rug in a room with other solid or patterned fabric. There are so many geometric varieties available that go with many different design styles. As long as you maintain a common color theme, there’s nothing else to hold you back from having some fun with your rugs! To really tie everything together, scatter those complementary colors on other decor items, such as accent pillows, throws, and window treatments. If bold colors or patterns aren’t really your style, opt for something lighter in color but full in texture.

Define spaces that need defining. 

Use a rug to define or separate areas, such as seating or dining areas, and foyers. It doesn’t matter if you have a small apartment, an open-concept floorplan, or simply a large room that needs some definition: a rug is a perfect solution. For example, an oversized area rug can often serve dual purpose connecting living and dining spaces with style. And something as simple as a runner, which is essentially a narrower version of an area rug, can clearly define traffic areas throughout the home in an interesting and functional way. 

Let your area rug be the focal point. 

Let’s face it: every room needs a focal point— but sometimes, figuring out what that focal point should be can be hard. If that’s something you struggle with, an area rug is an easy fix to that dilemma. This can be done in a couple of ways. The first is to invest in an eye-candy type of rug. You know, one that just really makes a statement. Or, if you have a rug you already love, take it up a notch by having it upgraded a bit. Did you know that rugs can be notched around architectural features and even trimmed out in a color that will coordinate with other colors in your home? Customization is a guaranteed way to turn an area rug into something extraordinary. 

Another way to make an area rug into a focal point is to use it somewhere other than the floor. Like the wall. Seriously! Who says rugs have to go under your feet? Sometimes, you just need to go vertical. One way to hang a rug on the wall is with velcro. This is a method used by many museums that display textiles. Another method is to hang it with a curtain rod. Whichever you choose, this is a really simple way to create an interesting focal point.  

When Choosing a Rug, Size Matters 

Always remember the importance of size before making a purchase. The size of the space and use for the rug (i.e. what all needs to sit on the rug comfortably) should both be determining factors. While a quality rug isn’t necessarily inexpensive, making an investment in one will be well worth it.
