A lot has happened over the last few months— and if there’s anything we’ve come to appreciate most, is the fact that we have a roof over our heads. Quarantine aside, there comes a time when we begin to re-evaluate the decor within our home (although, quarantine sure has caused many people to scrutinize more rapidly than usual). After all, at the end of the day, we come home— and it’s what surrounds us once we get there that influences how we both function and feel. So it only makes sense the urge to give our personal space a refresh arises every now and then.
The thing is, even though we may want to redecorate, it can be hard to know if it’s the right time to actually do it. So just how do you figure out the timing for a decor update or overhaul? Here are some reasons it might be time to take the plunge.
1. Your family is changing
Over time, family structures change. Perhaps you’re at the stage where you are expanding your family with a baby. Or even a new pet. In a situation such as this, you want to provide a liveable space for everyone, which would involve some adjustments to your space like kid-friendly fabrics and furnishings. On the flip side, maybe you’re facing an empty nest. The kids have moved out, which means you don’t have to decorate with them in mind anymore. A bittersweet stage for sure, but a stage that also offers an opportunity to express a style that might not have been feasible while they were young.
2. You’ve moved to a new home
No one expects you to live in a home that was decorated to suit someone else’s style. It’s only natural the first thing you’d want to do is make the space yours by painting the walls or changing the window treatments to match the bedding and furniture you’ve brought with you. Even if you can’t do everything you want to do initially, you can start on some of the changes.
3. You’re obsessed with a new fabric or trend
There are times when we fall head over heels for a new fabric or decorating trend. However, if you don’t act quickly, it may be harder to obtain. If you fall in love with a particular fabric, go for it. Depending on how long you drag your feet, it may sell out quickly or become discontinued altogether, leaving you extremely disappointed. A trend, of course, doesn’t really sell out, but it can wane. If there’s a trend you just can’t get off your mind, incorporate it into your home ASAP.
4. You have extra money to spend
Maybe you just got a nice bonus from work, sold something and made a profit, or fell into an inheritance. Or, perhaps you finally save up the amount you wanted to go toward your redecorating project. However it happened, it’s a wonderful feeling to have extra money to tackle a project that’s been on your list. As long as the bills are taken care of, use that money for some fun redecorating. Keep in mind though, that once it’s gone, it’s gone— so plan it out carefully, making sure to put your money towards what you really want.
5. You need to make sense of your mix-matched furniture
Perhaps you’re living on your own for the first time or maybe you’ve inherited some antiques from your grandparents. Or, maybe you simply have a habit of picking up random pieces for future DIYs. Whatever the situation, you’ve found yourself with mix-matched pieces that don’t really go together. If that’s the case, sometimes a change in paint color or window treatments can blend it all in a way where it actually works.
6. Because you want to
If there’s nothing holding you back and you have the urge to do so, why not redecorate the place in a way that makes you happy? Most people can’t redecorate on a whim, but many can do small updates at a time. Do what feels comfortable based on your particular situation.
