We always hear about how great textiles made with natural fibers are. After all, they are. And while they are certainly wonderful choices for any home, there comes a time when a synthetic fabric might be the better option. Thanks to modern technology, synthetic fibers have come a long way. Indoor and outdoor fabrics are no longer confined to the spaces designated by their names. These fabrics are durable, easy to clean, and attractive, making them a win for parents, pet owners, and well, just about anybody really. Let’s take a quick look at some popular choices in the category of synthetic fabrics.Â
1. Ultrasuede
Invented in 1970 by Dr. Miyoshi Okamoto, a scientist working for Toray Industries, Ultrasuede (more commonly known as microfiber) is a fabric typically made from synthetic materials such as polyester, nylon, and polyamides. Oftentimes, they are combined with other materials like polypropylene. Ultrasuede is a popular choice for upholstery for several reasons including its cleanability, durability, dyeability, and its resistance to dirt and mildew. It’s also the perfect alternative for suede leather at a fraction of the cost.
2. Polyester
Polyester still has a bit of a bad rap but honestly, it’s worth giving a second chance. The polyester of today can be a wonderful, budget-friendly alternative if you have a fondness for the feel and sheen of fabrics such as silk. Polyester-cotton blends are even better in that they are also less prone to wrinkling, fading, and abrasion.Â
3. Sunbrella Acrylic
Solution-dyed acrylic (trade name Sunbrella) remains colorfast after sun exposure, as well as wear and tear because the coloring takes place before the yarn is ever created. Liquid acrylic solution and color are mixed together, formed into a fiber, and then spun into yarn, which contributes to its incredible fade resistance. It’s also soft, comfortable, and breathable.
4. Crypton
Crypton isn’t technically a fabric itself, but rather a technology that is used to create a wider variety of performance fabrics. With Crypton technology you get dazzling, decorative indoor fabrics that include linens, velvets, suedes and leathers, stunning jacquard weaves, ikats, stripes, geometrics, and more. These are beautiful, easy-to-clean, odor-free fabrics designed to meet the demands for the way you live, work, heal and play.
5. Nylon & Olefin
Nylon and olefin are two synthetic fibers produced from polyethylene or polypropylene. They are often blended with other materials in home decor but are sometimes used by themselves.Â
Nylon fabrics are entirely synthetic, which means there are no traces of any organic material used to manufacture them. Nylon isn’t as versatile as some other synthetics because of its low light resistance and tendency to pill.Â
Olefin is a soft, lightweight, and eco-friendly woven fabric that is resilient, colorfast, stain-resistant, and durable. It can also be produced in a variety of textures, weaves, colors, and prints, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor settings.Â
