What’s Trending in Textiles for 2022

Textile trends in the home might not change as quickly as they do in the world of fashion, but they do change. The good news is that most options are ones that are suitable for use over the course of years, rather than just a season. As this year winds down to a close, let’s take a look at what fabric trends will have our attention in 2022.

Reviving the Classics: Bouclé and Corduroy

If we’ve learned anything over the last two years is that the comforts of home are invaluable. With more time spent in their own abodes, many people were able to take their spaces at face value, examining with a critical eye as to what improvements could be made to increase both comfort and functionality. Because of this, it’s really no surprise that two classic textiles, bouclé and corduroy, are getting a bit of a revival.

With its nubby and velvety quality, bouclé is the epitome of comfort. Derived from the French word meaning “curled” or “ringed,” bouclé is often used to describe a yarn, made from a series of looped fiber, or the fabric made from it. Its first surge in popularity in the United States dates back to 1940, with the debut of Saarinen’s Womb Chair—a piece designed per the request of Florence Knoll, a friend and fellow designer who wanted a chair she could “really curl up in.” Just as it was popular then, it’s popular now— and more stylish than ever.

Often made of cotton, bouclé is both soft and durable. Its versatility makes it possible to use it just about anywhere. And, it’s great for softening spaces that contain a lot of hard-edged elements.

When it comes to corduroy, we often associate it with pants. But it makes for a really fantastic upholstery choice as well! Not only is it soft and durable, but its vertical furrows also make it visually appealing. Additionally, it’s such an awesome fabric that it fits into any interior design style with ease.

Bold Patterns

Whether small and subtle or large and bold, pattern choices in the home can really say a lot about the personality of the person living there. While patterns, in general, are a great addition to any home, this year, bold is in— specifically, florals and geometrics.

The good news is that these are always beautiful choices that never really go out of style. The only difference is that this year you’ll likely see them at the forefront as the star rather than in the background fulfilling a supporting role.

Aren’t sure where to use bold patterns in your home? It can be as simple as custom throw pillows to something a bit more daring like an accent chair or a fabric feature wall. Whatever you choose, just make sure it will command your attention.

Sustainable and Environmentally-Friendly

The sustainability trend is nothing new. For years now, we’ve been gravitating more and more to greener products. Now, it’s spilling over into textiles. Where do they come from? Are the methods used to produce them environmentally friendly? In response to questions such as these, the textile industry has produced a variety of suitable options including fair-trade organic cotton, vegetarian or vegan leather, fabrics from recycled polyester or resource-friendly hemp, and more. As demand continues to grow, so will the range of selections.
