Out of all the rooms in a house, we spend the most time in the bedroom. This, of course, totally makes sense as we spend one-third of our life sleeping— an average of 36 years in bed over the course of a lifetime! And while we always desire comfort when we lay our head down to rest, we often want more when winter arrives. After all, it doesn’t get much better than having a cozy retreat for rest and relaxation. Since the bedroom is the most personal (and most used) space in a home, it shouldn’t be ignored. Let’s talk a bit about how bedding and decor can effectively ward off winter’s chill.
Getting the Bedding Right
Bedtime during the winter months isn’t all that enjoyable unless your bedding keeps you warm and cozy. For a wonderful night’s sleep, free from the cold, look to decking out your bed in one of the following products.
- Flannel sheets. Cotton and linen are great choices for keeping you cool in the summer, but when it comes to winter, opt for something warmer like flannel sheets. Some benefits of flannel sheets are that they insulate you by trapping and retaining body heat while still allowing your skin to breathe, they have the ability to wick away moisture from the body, and of course, they’re soft and cozy to the touch.Â
- Wool blankets. Wool is known for its warmth, so it’s no surprise that a wool blanket would be a wise choice for your bed. Be sure to dry clean it [only] and store it in a moth-free zone. Wool is an investment, but it’s worth it considering it can stand the test of time and offer a lifetime of quality. Wool is also anti-static, making it a fabric that stays cleaner than most others.Â
- Silk-filled comforters. You might not think of silk when you think warmth, but it is wonderful at equalizing temperature. In warm weather, silk draws heat and moisture from the body. With its lightweight and breathable qualities, a silk-filled comforter will conform nicely to your body, keeping you comfortable throughout the night.Â
- Down comforter (duvet). If down can keep our feathered friends warm, it can keep us warm too. In fact, downs are considered nature’s best insulator. Not only does down offer warmth by trapping heat, but it also does so without too much weight on your body or causing heat under the covers. No wonder it’s the most popular choice for bedding. Down can be authentic or synthetic and will range in price based on fill power. Good down products offer longevity, so be sure toÂ
To add extra warmth and style, top off your winter bedding with some extra pillows and throw blankets. The layers will add beautiful texture and comfort to the space all while keeping you extra warm and comfortable.Â
Warm Bedroom Decor to Complete the Space
Adding in some cozy decor is a great way to complete the space. Here are some ideas for some bedroom extras that can provide a sense of warmth.
- Freshen up your color scheme to reflect the season. You don’t have to do anything drastic— simply find ways to bring in new colors for the short term. Colors like black, white, gray, blue, and even dark purple or red can give you a cozy retreat feel. Metallics are also winter winners. With their unique seasonal choices, there’s no shortage of how creative you can get in your home, not just in winter, but all year long.Â
- Adjust the lighting so that it’s softer. Lighting is such an integral part of the warmth and ambiance your home has. While we need brighter lights for certain tasks, those winter evenings when you’re curled up for the night call for something a little less. This is where a dimmer switch comes into play. If you can’t install a dimmer switch, you can get soft light by relying on sconces, candles, and lamps. All are great ways to take the chill out of the room.
- Turn to furniture for winter warmth. Dark wood furniture, mirrored furniture, and even furniture painted white can add warmth to a bedroom. If you have room to spare, squeeze in a chaise lounge, bench, or upholstered chair to create an intimate seating area.
- Add in cozy accessories. Accessories such as heavyweight window treatments, a wool rug (or at least a fuzzy one), soft throw blankets, and textured, chunky pillows are the perfect addition to the room to finish off the look, as well as to minimize the chill.
