To me, it’s hard not to love tufted furniture. When walking into a room, tufted furniture is just one of those things my eyes are immediately drawn to. There’s just something about it–a perfect blend of elegant and trendy. Regardless of your decorating style, the tailored look of a tufted piece can easily elevate the style of a room. One might think it’s popularity would wane after being on the scene for more than a couple of centuries, but that’s hardly the case. Tufted furniture remains wildly popular today–and for good reason.
What is Tufting?
Upholsterers achieve the tufted look by threading through layers of fabric or leather, often in a pattern, and securing the ends of the thread with a knot or button. The dense clusters that this technique creates are known as “tufts.”
Although the knots or buttons can be placed close together or farther apart, they are always uniformly placed with purpose, usually creating a diamond pattern over the fabric. Typically, the buttons match or are covered in the main fabric, however, they are sometimes done in a contrasting color, giving the piece a little more punch.
Why Tufted Furniture is Swoonworthy
There are a few specific reasons I can’t get enough of tufted furniture:
- Longevity. Over time, cushions lose their form and begin to look tired, leaving furniture looking lumpy and sloppy. Tufts, however, help furniture retain its structure and posture, meaning it’s more likely to last longer than non-tufted pieces.
- Versatility. Today, tufted pieces are available to complement any design style.
- Comfort. Because of the extra attention to detail in regards to the stitching, tufted furniture remains plush and plump without having to continuously fluff it.
- Style. Tufted furniture is incredibly stylish, adding both texture and depth to any room.
- Timeless. Through the decades, tufted furniture has stayed the course, never going out of style. Because of this, tufted furniture is a wise investment.
