Decorating can be challenging at times, but it can really take some extra effort when you’re a renter. It can be hard to justify spending much when you’ll only be there a short while, but that doesn’t mean you can’t add some life, or a sense of personality, to the space while you’re there. There’s no need to spend big either. Before you begin, check with your landlord, but once you get the go-ahead, check out these ideas.
- Wall coverings. Believe it or not, you don’t actually have to put wallpaper up permanently to get a killer accent wall. Simply take a single roll of your favorite wallpaper and hang a long sheet of it up with some double-sided tape. If wall paper isn’t your thing, consider putting fabric up on the walls. Fabric is easy to adhere and easy to remove when it comes time to move. A large piece of art is another way to go. Investing in a painting you love won’t feel like such a waste of money since it can move with you when you go. Paint is sometimes allowed by landlords, but it often includes painting it back before you leave. If you’re not up to the task twice, then stick with one of the earlier options.
- Furniture. Furniture, specifically a sofa, is best in a neutral color if you’re moving from place to place. A sofa in a neutral shade will outlast all those color trends, leaving you with a piece that will work in all your future spaces.
- Area rug. An area rug is a way to make a statement without having to resort to construction of any sort. Not only will it define the space with a splash of color, it can be used at your next place.
- Headboard. Since a headboard can travel easily, it is definitely something to consider when decorating. A free standing headboard is a great place to start, but there are other items that can serve the same purpose. Salvaged finds like old doors, wood pallets and room dividers are great headboard alternatives. When you’re done you can try selling them back or take them with you.
- Window treatments. Curtains are a wonderful way to add color without taking much effort. Upgrade the rod to a longer style and they’ll most likely be able to be used again.
- Accessories. Accessories such as pillows, throws and mirrors are all great ways to make a statement or add a punch of color. Pillows and throws are easy to change out seasonally, making them even more perfect choices for a rental space.
