Think Ahead: 2014 Spring Color Trends

The weather outside might still be frightful, but that doesn’t mean it’s too early to start thinking about spring, especially when it comes to decorating your home. A great way to brush off the winter chill is to add fresh bursts of color throughout your home and that’s exactly what you’ll see this spring: color. Let’s take a look what’s in store for the upcoming season.

Into the wild blue yonder

This spring, it’s all about blue hues. The color blue is essentially soothing, aiding in concentration and calming of the mind. To some, it can be regarded as cold and sad, but to most, it evokes a feeling of security, as well as a sense of peace and tranquility.

In the home, blue works well in spaces such as bathrooms, living areas, bedrooms and offices. When decorating, keep in mind that bold blues will stimulate the mind, while softer shades will soothe. This will be important in choosing what shades to use in what rooms.

So what shades will be extra popular this season? While navy and indigo will top the list, there will be plenty of other beautiful hues to choose from that may fit your space a bit better. Take Pantone’s Dazzling and Placid blues for example. Both are shades that provide a lovely balance for those who prefer something mid-tone, rather than a blue that’s too dark or too light.

Not sure what to pair your blues with? White and blue is a classic combo that can’t go wrong, but if you’re up for something different, take a cue from two other hot colors of the season: gray and orange-red.

Gray is becoming the new beige, which is a great thing because it works wonderfully with many colors, including most, if not all, shades of blue. Pops of orange-red can be integrated within your color scheme by way of pillows, an upholstered chair cushion, or even a repurposed, painted piece of furniture.

A twist on the traditional

According to Pantone, designers take a modern twist on the traditional for spring 2014 by pairing soft pastels with vivid brights to create a colorful equilibrium. The palette consisting of Placid Blue, Violet Tulip, Hemlock, Paloma, Sand, Freesia, Cayenne, Celosia Orange, Dazzling Blue, and the color of the year, Radiant Orchid, offers something for everyone wanting to add some fresh colors into their home this spring.
