One sure way to make a room look and feel complete? Roll out a rug. For some rooms, however, you may want to consider rolling out two or three. Whether it’s to fill a large space or simply double up on texture, there are many reasons why you should get on board with layering the rugs within your home.
Layering rugs have proven to be a trend that isn’t going anywhere. This is especially good for those of us who have a hard time narrowing down our choices — do I go neutral? Patterened? Bold? Persian? On the other hand, this can be challenging to those of us who aren’t sure how to toss several rugs on the floor in the same space in a way that looks stylish.
Today, I hope to eliminate some of the confusion and replace it with some confidence. By following some of these tips, you’ll be layering rugs like a pro in no time.
First of all, though, let’s talk about why layering rugs can be a good idea. Layering rugs can:
- Highlight something special within the space by guiding the eye
- Fill in a large gap when a smaller rug you love isn’t big enough
- Protect multiple areas of your floor
- Create contrast and visual appeal with its texture
- Make a space feel warm and welcoming
1. Work With the Room
While you can certainly layer rugs wherever you choose, they often look better in rooms such as bedrooms, living rooms, or dens. Simple rooms can easily handle pattern upon pattern. Rooms that have a lot going on already with the decor tend to look better with a pattern upon a solid. The bottom line is to take the space into consideration and piece together your rugs in a way that complements the rest of the decor. Tip: if you aren’t sure what to layer atop your base rug, you can never go wrong with a hide or a smaller Persian.
2. Keep the Colors Cohesive
Layered rugs just don’t look aesthetically pleasing if the colors clash. What it really comes down to is color coordinating. As long as the colors work together, you can mix and match patterns as much as you like. This makes it extremely easy to piece together multiple rugs to cover a large area.
3. Pay Attention to Size
When it comes to layering rugs, size matters. If you want the right look, it’s important to make sure that your rugs are different sizes. One should be a large rug that dominates that space, while the other(s) should be smaller rugs that serve as an accent. Another option would be to layer small, identical rugs over each other. Not sure what type of large rug to set as your foundation? Consider sisal or jute–both make an excellent choice for the large rug base.
Despite these guidelines, it’s important to remember that there really are no concrete rules when it comes to layering rugs. Go with your gut and don’t be afraid to push past your usual comfort zone a bit.
