Open-Concept Spaces: The Appeal, The Drawbacks, and How to Decorate Successfully

Tune into any design show and you’re sure to hear the term “open-concept” (or something similar). Not only has the popularity of open floor plans risen in recent years, but they also seem to be the one big thing that many people look for in a home. But why is it so in demand? Are there downfalls to open floor plans? Furthermore, how do you decorate it in a way where it looks cohesive rather than chaotic? That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

What does open-concept mean?

An open-concept space has no or few dividing walls between areas in the main area of the home, which includes the kitchen, living room, and dining room. Instead of each room being sectioned off, there is an open, flowing layout.

The Appeal

For most people, open floor plans are appealing because they encourage sociable living. While individual rooms would typically block residents of the home off from one another, open floor plans create a space where they can interact with one another much more easily.

In an open-concept home, entertaining is a breeze, which is another perk that makes these types of layouts appealing. You can easily chat with guests while you cook and set up.

People who live in smaller homes are also drawn to open concepts. Knocking down walls in smaller homes is a great way to create a feeling of more space.

The Drawbacks

While there is certainly a strong argument for open-plan living, there are also some drawbacks of it. The main one being privacy. When walls are torn down, some privacy is lost, which can pose challenges for busy families.

Another drawback is that you lose wall space. If you are one who loves to display art or family photos, this may be a problem. Additionally, fewer walls usually mean fewer electrical outlets. This may make it more difficult to conceal unsightly wiring.

Lastly, open-concept living means you have to maintain a certain level of tidiness. Having ample storage is one way that can really help with this.

How to Successfully Decorate an Open-Concept Home

There are various ways that you can decorate your open floor plan in a way that showcases all the things you love about it. Here are some tips that can get you started.

Define Areas with Furnishings and Lighting

Although open-concept technically a merging of three main rooms in a home, it is important that each space is defined in a way that makes its purpose obvious. The easiest way to do this is by arranging your furniture to where it carves out separate functional spaces. Adding area rugs throughout the space can further define each area if needed.

Lighting can also define different parts of a room. Pendants over the island, a chandelier over the dining table, and a ceiling fan in the living area are a few examples of how to do this.

Maintain Design Continuity

If you don’t maintain design continuity throughout an open floor plan it will look chaotic, rather than cohesive. Fundamental design features (e.g. flooring, recessed lighting) should be consistent.

Color palettes between all defined spaces should also complement one another. This includes features like paint colors and fabrics.

Create a Focal Point in Each Area

If you want each defined area to stand out rather than blend in, it is important that each area has its own focal point. This could be a fireplace in the living area, an island in the kitchen, or a gallery wall in the dining room. Have fun and be creative in giving each space its own personality.

Keep the Floor Plan Open

The whole point of an open floor plan is its openness. This means that you have to place things strategically throughout the space. Be sure not to block windows or sight lines with tall furniture or accessories.
