Layer Drapes like an Interior Designer jpg

How to Layer Drapes like an Interior Designer

Layering drapes is one of the most significant changes, as well as one of the most popular practices in curtain style today. Not only do layered drapes look lush, they also serve as a multi-functional window treatment, providing things like privacy, insulation and light control. When it comes to layering drapes there is a general rule to follow: sheer + opaque. During the day the sheers will provide privacy while still letting light in. At night, the opaque fabric will shut light out, ward off drafts and serve as a buffer for noise at night, allowing for much better sleep. Other than adhering to that rule, the possibilities are endless, which means you can mix and match prints, colors and textures to express your style in a very unique way.

Layering curtains is easier than you might think. As long as you have a double-rod suspension system, some brackets, tools and fabrics of choice, you can have your windows dressed up nicely.

Tips for Layering Fabrics

  • Since double curtain rods use two poles, but only one bracket, the standard rule has been to place the brackets two to four inches above the window. However, you can create drama and the illusion of extra height by placing the brackets and rods closer to the ceiling. For the width, brackets should be at the very least two to three inches out from each side of the window although do not be scared to make them wider. Tip: When the drapes are open, they should not cover the window at all.
  • If you have different sized rods, hang the sheers on the thinner rod, which will go behind the thicker rod. If you have decorative finials, place them on the outer (thicker) rod so they are easily seen.
  • Sheers come in a variety of weights, colors, and patterns so be creative. A colored sheer curtain will change the hue of the light that shines through. Adding a patterned sheer print is a great way to make a bold statement and showcase your decorative side.
  • Lace curtains are a wonderful alternative to standard sheers.
  • Get a designer look by adding tiebacks, holdbacks, medallions, or other hardware that will hold your opaque drapery fabric in creative ways.
  • If you need complete light blockage at night, hang blackout panels, which can also be found in stylish colors, or create your own to make your interior perfectly!
  • If you want even more depth and texture, go for a third rod and add a valance or incorporate a shade made from natural fibers such as bamboo, banana leaf or hessian.

As mentioned earlier, layered draperies don’t seem to be going anywhere. The look and feel you can get in your space is well worth the small amount of time and effort it takes to get them hung.
