Halloween Craft Ideas for Kids

Orange Burlap

Halloween is just around the corner and if you have kids, then crafts may be a big part of the season for you. Here are some craft ideas for kids that are not only easy and fun, but also cute enough to display throughout your home. Keep reading for inspiration on how to keep your little trick-or-treaters occupied and entertained.

Hanging Fabric Ghosts

To make these, you’ll need white paper lanterns (without the lighting kit), plain white fabric, black felt, fabric glue (or hot glue gun), scissors, and string (or twine). You want the fabric to drape nicely, so make sure you have enough white fabric to cover the size of your lantern. You’ll also want the lantern’s hanging hook exposed, so you will need to cut a slit into the top of the fabric. Add a spooky felt face and then hang your ghost from a shepherd’s hook, light post or tree limb.

Decorative Wreath

Whether it’s used for your front door, or just the door in your kid’s room, making a wreath is pretty simple to do. Buy a wreath ring and let your kiddos deck it out with things like candy corn, dried nuts or fruit, fake (or dried) flowers or leaves from the back yard. Add some felt cutouts in shapes of witches, ghosts, bats or black cats to make it fitting for the holiday.

Glittered Trick-or-Treat Bags

For this project you’ll need a plain canvas tote bag or a stiff fabric, water-based craft paint, glitter, pen/pencil, paintbrushes, scissors and a drop cloth to protect the work surface. If you are using fabric, cut and sew a regular rectangular bag, attach either fabric handles or poke holes near the top of the bag and slide a wide sturdy ribbon through and tie at the ends. Simply trace a downloaded image (or images) onto the bag, color with paint and then drizzle with glitter. Once the paint dries, pour off the excess glitter, saving as much as you can for future projects.

Hanging Foam or Fabric Bats

Nothing screams spooky like bats in the night. To make them you’ll need black craft foam, black felt, or any fabric of your choosing if you want to attach it to the foam, scissors, fishing line, googly eyes, craft glue, a pencil, and a hole punch. Find a bat template you like online, print it and cut it out so it can be used for tracing onto the black foam. Once traced, cut it out of the fabric or foam and add the googly eyes. Punch a hole into the base, run your fishing line through and hang the bats from places like the ceiling, mantle, or even from trees in the front and back yard.

Paint a Pumpkin

Nothing is easier or more fun than adding paint to something. Let your little ones unleash their creativity on some simple pumpkins. Whatever the size, your kids can jazz up pumpkins by painting traced images, a spooky scene, their name, a favorite pattern, or whatever else strikes their fancy. Want to get more creative? Try cutting the pumpkins from burlap or canvas for some neat texture! Display them proudly in and outside of the house.
