Designer Look in Your Home for Less

How to Get a Designer Look in Your Home for Less

Many people who want to have a high-end home simply don’t have the high-end budget to go along with it. Thankfully, there are tips and tricks for getting the designer look for less. With careful planning and selective buying, fueled by a “high-low mix” mentality (blend of high- and low-end products), you can achieve the look you desire without overspending. Here are some of our favorite ways to add those designer touches in an affordable way.

Crown Molding

When it comes to making your home look high-end and custom-made, details are key. Crown molding is one of those important details that can take your decor to the next level, making it appear elegant and complete. Fortunately, crown molding comes in a variety of sizes and prices, making it easy to find something that suits both your space and your budget.

Large-Scale Art

A variety of artwork on the walls is nice, but to get the most dramatic impact, opt for a single, large-scale piece. One painted canvas or print can give an entire room more drama and color than several smaller pieces can.

Oversized Mirrors

Mirrors are a great addition to any space–and because of the natural light they reflect, spaces feel more open than they really are. For a high-end designer look, invest in a large, oversized mirror that will enhance the drama and boost the style of your other decor.

Statement Lighting

Good lighting is an essential part of home decorating–but statement lighting is really where it’s at. The right pendant or chandelier can elevate the entire space, taking it from a design that’s nice to a design that wows. Lighting comes in such variety these days, it’s easy to find something that looks expensive without actually having the bill to match. Take capiz fixtures, for example. The shells are the perfect material for creating a high-end look affordably.

Custom Pillows

Accent pillows punch up a home’s decor while providing additional comfort and coziness. And although it’s easy to find accent pillows in-store or online, you want to be very selective if you wish to achieve a high-end look. A good rule of thumb is to avoid standard 12-18 inch pillows. Instead, invest in something larger like 22 inches or above. Large, overstuffed pillows, especially ones made with handpicked fabric,  will give you a plush and elegant appearance (bonus points for down filling).

Marble Accessories

Marble certainly has the price tag to match its high-end look but that’s no reason to avoid it altogether. Instead of decking out your kitchen or bathroom with countertops made of the material, opt for using it in smaller doses. One or two beautiful accessories such as a serving tray or cutting board made of marble will still a have presence within the space if if it doesn’t appear anywhere else.

Hardware Finishes

Drawer pulls and knobs don’t usually get much thought, but they are an excellent way to get a designer touch without investing too much. To minimize stress, skip those big chain home improvement stores altogether. Instead, find your elegant, more expensive-looking pieces in places like smaller hardware stores, antique shops, flea markets, and online hot spots such as Etsy. You’ll have a much greater chance at finding something unique and affordable.

Window Treatments

Last, but certainly not least, are window treatments. Yes, there are times window treatments aren’t necessary, but in most cases, they are the finishing touch to any design. When selecting window treatments, make smart choices. For instance, avoid treatments without lining and stick with elegant materials such as silk, linen, and cotton. Woven bamboo shades, custom Roman shades, or wood blinds are also some other options for dressing your window.
