Easy Budget-Friendly Holiday Decorations

Making your home look festive for the holidays doesn’t have to be stressful. This year, start a new tradition of substituting the expensive ready-made decorations for creative and less costly ones. A simple trip to the craft store and a stroll through your kitchen is all it really takes to make your home feel warm and merry. Read on for 5 inventive combinations to try this season.

1. Sweet treats + glass containers. Display some of your favorite holiday treats in glass containers you have in your kitchen. Top off a cake stand with iced cookies or cupcakes, arrange candy canes arranged like flowers in a vase, fill a decorative bottle or jar with colorful, holiday-wrapped chocolate kisses. Arranging them as a vignette will make it an irresistible display.

2. Ornaments + bowls. Glass ball ornaments are typically inexpensive and come in a rainbow of colors. It’s possible you already have some stashed in a closet or the attic. Create an eye-catching display by piling a bunch of them in a large decorative bowl. You can even add some tinsel, beads, and greenery to the mix if you’d like. It’s an easy way to add a splash of festive fun to your tabletops or mantle.

3. Greenery + scraps of trim. Continue wrapping that banister with garland–but instead, opt for scraps of ribbon or fabric rather than those large bows. Not only do the cost of those bows add up, they’re all the same. With scraps of ribbon and fabric, you can personalize your holiday garland in a new way.

4. Wrapping paper + ribbon + greenery. With all the gift giving going on, why not utilize some of that extra wrapping paper for decorating purposes? Wrap up some empty boxes and use them for decor. Keep it colorful by using a variety of papers or stick with a classic brown paper and string. It doesn’t matter if you stack them or scatter them–just make sure you have some greenery nearby for an ultra-festive look.

5. Knit stockings + wooden letters. Nice Christmas stockings can add up, especially if you have a large family. Furthermore, it can be hard to find ones that blend pleasantly with your decor. This year, consider cable knit stockings in solid colors. While you can find them pre-made at stores such as Land’s End and Target, you can also make them yourself by using old sweaters found at thrift stores, or even, your own closet. Grab some small wooden letters–one for the first initial of everyone’s name–and attach them to the top. You can even glue on some colorful buttons to make them even more personalized.
