Non-Traditional Windows Window Drapery
Non-traditional windows, such as box, bow and bay, are highly desirable in a home. While these windows, known for their elegant arches and angles, make for a beautiful focal point in a room, they can also pose challenges when it comes to dressing them up. Before we get into the best treatments, let’s talk about what makes them different.
- A box window is a window set back from the room with walls that are perpendicular to it. Sometimes the walls have windows and sometimes they won’t.
- A bow window is comprised of three to six windows that are equal in size. The bow design is gradually curved.
- A bay window is made up of three windows, usually of varying sizes. The large center window is often flanked by two windows of smaller size.
Before you run out to purchase window treatments and hardware, there are a few things to take into consideration:
- What is your budget? Window treatments can add up quickly, so think about how you want the windows to look. If what you want costs more than what you have, tuck some extra money aside until you have enough to cover the look you want.
- What is your home’s decor like? Non-traditional windows are often a showcase piece within the room. Dress them like they’re extra special, ensuring that they compliment the rest of the decor.
- Where is/are the window(s) located? The position of the window will determine the thickness needed.
Whether you treat the windows as one large unit or several joined pieces will determine the approach you take when it comes time to dress them. Each way for dressing has its own beauty and should adhere to what works in your home.
- If you prefer drapery panels, you have two options: mounting a rod and hanging panels outside the window, or mounting rods on the inside and hanging panels over each individual pane. This will also work
- If you prefer Roman shades or valances, again, there are two options: mounting treatments inside the window molding or mounting them outside the molding. Mounting them inside the molding will enhance each individual pane and mounting them outside the molding will meld the windows together visually because the ends of each will be touching.
- Don’t forget that multiple dressings will work for each as well. For example, you can deck the top off with valances and the bottom half with plantation shutters. You can also layer drapery panels over shades as well. As long as you keep the look uniformed there’s not much you can’t do.
