How to Decorate for Fall Even Though it Still Feels Like Summer

If you live in a climate that’s warm year-round, you may have missed the memo that fall is right around the corner. While friends and family in other locations might be gearing up for boots and pumpkin spice lattes, you’re still sporting shorts and flip-flops, making it very hard to even really think about a season change. Not to worry, there’s still time to be festive and add a taste of fall spice to your home. How? By focusing on smaller and more affordable decorative details that can be changed in and out easily. You may not think small touches of autumn are enough, but they really do make an amazing difference!

When it’s hot outside, the last thing you want is for your home to feel bogged down. This is why it’s best to focus on adding a few splashes of autumn-inspired color rather than giving your home an entire seasonal overhaul.

A Splash of Color Here, a Splash of Color There

Adding seasonal color is easier than you might realize. There are so many ways it can be done!

Initially, when we talk about adding color to our homes, our minds tend to gravitate toward paint…

While using paint is indeed a pretty popular (and successful) go-to when a home is in need of a pick-me-up, it’s not feasible for everyone. Homeowners who live in warmer climates tend to stick to lighter hues that keep their homes feeling cool even on the hottest of days, which is completely understandable. If you are up for a project, however, consider whipping out a paintbrush.

So what colors give a proper and respectable nod to the season? More than you might realize!

Typically, golden and tawny tones are perfect for this time of year— but there’s no need to feel limited. There are actually a lot more colors that work— many of which can be kept around well beyond the season. Take Pantone’s autumn/winter palette for example. This year includes various shades of blue, green, yellow, gray, and even red and pink. While their color picks are showcased during Fashion Week, they affect the trends that we see in home decorating. Accent walls, chairs, dressers, shelves, cabinets, stairs, and more can all benefit from a fresh coat of color, so don’t hold back.

In addition to paint, color can be brought in through textiles and accessories…  How to Decorate for Fall Even Though It Still Feels Like Summer DFW Decor Shop Uttermost Golden Leaves Shadow Box Set.jpg

Textiles are such a great way to add color, texture, and pattern to a space— all of which can really enhance the feel of a changing season. Be selective in textile choices this year, focusing on colorful accent pillow covers, throws, and rugs to bring the season to life. Fabrics that are rich in beautiful autumn colors and textures can make the transition to fall seamless. You can even choose fall-inspired fabrics for custom slipcovers or custom drapes. Neither are permanent and can be used over and over again in years to come. And, don’t forget to move those splashes of fall to other parts of your home— like the bedroom! Swap out those white duvet covers for rich tufted silk or velvet bedding and then top it off with a chunky throw and colorful pillows.

When it comes to pillows, having some made is incredibly easy! Simply browse our wide selection of discount design fabrics and then choose your favorite fall-hued one(s). Then, get to sewing! Or, better yet, have us make them for you. We can whip some custom covers up for you in no time! And, you can use the leftover scraps for other decorative items like napkins, placemats, or table runners.

Swapping your summer-themed accessories for fall-inspired ones is another popular way to effortlessly decorate your home for the season. Usher in fall with cinnamon-scented candles, bowls or baskets overflowing with pine cones, leaves, or gourds, and as mentioned earlier, rich-colored pillows and throws. Even something as simple as a vase filled with branches can give your home a more seasonal feel.

If all you can muster up are some pumpkins, that’s totally okay. Really! In fact, you can turn a simple pumpkin into something a lot more eye-catching. For example, etch your house number or your family name onto a pumpkin and set it by the front door. Another idea would be to paint details like stripes or polka dots onto the pumpkin. Or, you could carve out the top of pumpkins in multiple sizes so they can be used for faux fall flowers or candles.

The photographs and artwork on your walls are other accessories to keep in mind during this seasonal change. A pretty print rich with warm hues can easily set the mood inside even if it doesn’t feel like fall outside. Additionally, changing out those family photos on the beach to ones at the pumpkin patch is an easy way to embrace the season.

Live in a home that has a fireplace that never gets used? Forget the wood and fill it with candles instead. The glow of flickering candles is a fun way to mimic the glow of crackling wood without actually heating the house up. And don’t forget the mantle! Mantles are the perfect spot to house seasonal decor. Dress your fireplace mantle with accessories such as decorative pumpkins, fall flowers, or garland made of leaves.

Last but not least, let’s talk about that front door. After all, curb appeal is important! What better way to say, “fall has arrived” than by hanging a seasonal statement wreath? Whether you buy one or make it yourself, hang it on your door or on a wall somewhere else in the house, a wreath is one of the easiest ways you can bring the season to life!
