Whether you watch home decorating shows or not, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Chip and Joanna Gaines. Although they’ve been in business for years, it was their talent and creativity on HGTV’s Fixer Upper, that turned them into a household name. Strong in their faith, and adorable kids to boot, this talented couple showed us the most amazing home transformations. So amazing in fact, that people everywhere have fallen in love with the beauty and charm of industrial farmhouse, Joanna’s signature style. Just what is farmhouse style and how can you create the look in your own home? Let’s find out.
Farmhouse Style–in a Nutshell
Farmhouse interiors are all about the simple details.Â
Somewhere between rustic and shabby chic, farmhouse style is about less fuss and more comfort, with ease. This reemerging style tends to appeal to those looking to reconnect with simpler times. At the foundation, its color scheme is neutral–lots of white walls–with accents of other soft, yet colorful hues layered on top. Elements that make this design style so special and unique include rustic and reclaimed wood, tried and true metals, and vintage-like pieces (especially lighting). Over the years, this style has evolved into a design style that anyone can add to their interiors–no farmhouse or acreage required. Here are 5 ways you can create that charming and comforting farmhouse style anywhere.
Mastering the Industrial Farmhouse Look
1. Embrace wood.Â
Wood brings warmth and beauty to any space. Because of its abundance and accessibility, it’s easy–now more than ever–to use in your decor. The more rustic, the better. Pieces of furniture and hardwood floors are easy ways to get farmhouse charm without having to renovate your entire home. Scrapes and scuffs tell a story about the house, so think twice before buffing them out. To keep with true farmhouse fashion, paint wood wall paneling white.
Wood accessories also add to the rustic, farmhouse feel. Think antique washboards and spindles or signs for the wall made out of barn wood.Â
2. Use relaxed textiles.Â
In past years, textiles were often handmade or passed down through the generations. The mixing and matching give the room an eclectic, lived-in feel. And while you may not have enough of grandma’s linens to outfit your entire home, there are plenty of fabric dealers (like ourselves!) that carry just the types of textiles you need whether your goal is to reupholster your sofa or simply lay out a new rug and pillows. Linen, cotton, and burlap fabrics in patterns like gingham, stripes, and plaid all make excellent choices for farmhouse living.Â
3. Focus on cooking and dining areas.Â
In farmhouse style, the kitchen is definitely the heart of the home. Apron-front sinks, wood countertops, and solid cabinetry (often including open shelving) are surefire ways to embrace the look. Some ceramic accessories, mason jar flower vases, and chunky cutting boards are good substitutes when the budget is limited. Farmhouses were meant for entertaining, so when it comes to the dining area, only one thing will suffice: the iconic farm table. To keep with the mix-and-match motto, surround it with a collection of eclectic chairs.
4. Bring in vintage light fixtures.Â
Rustic chandeliers, vintage pendants, and classic lanterns are perfect lighting choices for farmhouse design. Light fixtures have come a long way and there is an abundance of styles to choose from. And while there is nothing wrong with shopping for lighting at your typical box stores, there is much to be said for light fixtures that can be found at antique stores. With a little cleaning and some updated wiring, you can bring something truly authentic back to life.Â
5. Lighten the color palette.Â
Farmhouse design is all about being light and bright. White walls typically set the stage for everything else within the space. If dark wood paneling is present in low-lighted areas, it is often painted white as well. Since you can’t undo paint on a wood wall, be confident in your decision. And, if you’re the type that must have some color, aim to use those colors sparingly.Â
6. Mix old and new elements.Â
One key focus in farmhouse design is to mix old, vintage items with other items that are new and fresh. For example, instead of using a standard vase for your flowers or greenery, try using something unexpected and vintage, such as a trio of mason jars or an old flour sifter. The goal isn’t to simply incorporate the old, but rather to incorporate the old and use it in a practical way.Â
7. Weave in some wire.
Wire decor, we mean, as in wire baskets! Wire baskets are a simple and easy way to get a rustic, farmhouse feel in your home. And there are so many ways they can be used! Try adding a few to the wall and/or to a tabletop to hold decorative bottles filled with flowers. You can even use a large one to store a few pillows or throws in your living room.
