The design world’s most anticipated color for 2023 has finally been announced. Pantone, the leader in color authority, has dubbed Viva Magenta 18-1750 the color that will see us through the upcoming year.
Pantone is known for choosing a color that reflects our current culture. This year is no different. As we move forward [after a few years of isolation] Viva Magenta is meant to be expressive of a new signal of strength.
Here’s what Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of Pantone Color Institute has to say about it:
“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.
Rooted in the primordial, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta reconnects us to original matter. Invoking the forces of nature, PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta galvanizes our spirit, helping us to build our inner strength.”
In essence, a brave and fearless hue that revels in joy and encourages self-expression.
Where to Use It In the Home
It might seem that magenta is a challenging color to use in the home. But honestly, it’s such a fun color, so why not give it a shot?!
Of course, our recommendation is to introduce it to your home through fabric. Consider reupholstering a reading nook armchair or an entryway bench cushion. Or, maybe think about having a duvet cover featuring this color custom-made for your bedroom. If not, at least work this color into your home with some throw pillows.
Again, this is such a fun color, so it could even be just the right shade to refinish a piece of wood furniture. Think about how lovely a wooden chair would look sitting in your bedroom or at your home office desk!
To provide balance, consider fleshing out the palette with one of Pantone’s complementary color suggestions. The “magentaverse” as they refer to it includes Viva Magenta (18-1750), Pale Dogwood (13-1404), Gray Sand (13-1010), Gray Lilac (13-3804), Pale Khaki (15-1216), Fields of Rye (15-1115), Agate Gray (15-6307), and Plein Air (13-4111).
