Choosing the Best Bathroom Colors

Although the bathroom isn’t the most frequented space in a home, it still shouldn’t be forgotten when it comes to home decorating. Whether it’s your master bath or one strictly for guests, it’s important to take time to choose colors that will work with the space. Here are some tips on how to choose the best bathroom colors for your home.

Tip #1: Refer to the color wheel

Sometimes, you just have to go back to the basics, and the color wheel is the perfect place to do so. It’s an easy way to examine complimentary and analogous colors, which in turn, helps you to narrow down what colors interest you.

Tip #2: Follow the rule of three

Once you’ve looked over the color wheel, choose three colors for your scheme. After you have your favorites, see if they work with the 70/20/10 rule: 70 percent of the lightest color, 20 percent of the second lightest, and 10 percent of the boldest. If you don’t like the way it works, pick out some other colors you love and shuffle them around until you get something that you like.

Before you move on from here, it’s important to understand that there’s a second rule of three that should be followed as well. Once those three colors are picked, they should be used at least three times in a room. This can easily be done by way of towels, sink accents, pieces of furniture, rugs or artwork.

Tip #3: Use bright colors for energy and “organic” ones for rest

Do you want your bathroom to feel upbeat or serene? If upbeat, go for two bright contrasting colors and then use white (or another neutral) to provide balance. “Organic” colors are simply colors inspired by nature, such as soft greens and blues. Colors such as these usually put you into a restful state.

Tip #4: Use your home for inspiration

If you aren’t sure where to begin, simply take a look around your home to see what color schemes you already have going. It’s only natural that you want each room to have their own identity, but it’s also important that the rooms flow together. A bathroom that somewhat blends with the rest of the rooms around it will enhance your home’s overall aesthetic, too.

Tip #5: Take a chance

People often think that warm, rich tones are too much for small bathrooms to handle. This couldn’t be more far from the truth. Dark colors shouldn’t be feared, but rather embraced. When paired with neutrals, rich colors add quite the drama to a space.
