There’s so much excitement this time of year. So much in fact, that we can get in over our heads with certain projects— especially, decorating for the holidays. This year, think simple. Sometimes, all it takes is a small change to make a big impact. Let’s talk about some simple and stylish ways you can get your home decorated for Thanksgiving. Not only will your home look great, but it’s something that can be done without the stress and with plenty of time to spare.
1. Put down the rake
Don’t rush to rake up those fallen leaves up before the company arrives for the holiday. Instead, leave them where they are and focus on something else. Not only do dried leaves act as a natural fertilizer, but their colors can also make your landscape look picture (and holiday) perfect this time of year.
2. Fill decorative containers with potted mums
With so much to do before Thanksgiving, the last thing on your mind is gardening. Mums are so plentiful this time of year and come ready in plastic nursery pots. All you really need to do is plop them down inside any existing urns or ceramic containers you have around the house. Once you’ve recovered from the holiday, you can move them to a more permanent location if you’d like.
3. Create a simple centerpiece
If your Thanksgiving is anything like ours, there won’t be much room for a centerpiece once the food is set out. This is why I prefer to take the easy route. Mini pumpkins atop a table runner, a cornucopia filled with gourds, or candles nestled in a box with leaves are just a few of the simple ways you can add a bit of festive color to your table without taking up too much space. No time for a centerpiece? No problem! Simply put out a tablecloth made with fabric rich in seasonal color. Even some simple fall-colored cloth napkins will do!
4. Hang a wreath in your entryway (or someplace unexpected)
A festive wreath on the front door or in the entryway of your home is such an easy way to add a pop of seasonal color and show your holiday spirit. And while wreaths do make a welcoming impression, there are many other places they can be hung. Some places to consider include:
- Over a mirror. For the most visual impact, scale your wreath to the size of the mirror itʼs resting on, and use an eye-catching ribbon to hang it securely.
- In a gallery wall. Simply swap out an existing piece of art for a fall-themed wreath.
- In front of a window. Hang your wreath on a central window using simple tiebacks to keep curtains draped just out of the way. Displaying a wreath in this manner makes it possible to enjoy it from indoors and out.
- Above a mantle. A decorative fall wreath above a fireplace can really enhance the look as a focal point.
5. Scatter around seasonal throw pillows
Whether you buy new pillows or simply change out the cover, pillows are a no-fail way to give your home a new vibe. For the Thanksgiving holiday, consider adding a handful of seasonal pillows in shades of cranberry, copper, and gold. They’ll look great and make supply an extra layer of comfort when it’s time to relax after the holiday meal.
6. Prep the guest room
Even if you only need the spare room to serve as the coat check area, it doesn’t hurt to spruce it up a bit. Run the vacuum, air it out, and make the bed. If you do have guests sleeping over, special touches like bottled water, the wi-fi password, and a fuzzy throw tossed at the foot of the bed will be greatly appreciated.
While you’re at it, don’t forget to also prep the powder room. Whether you have overnight guests or not, a well-stocked powder room is a must. Honestly, it doesn’t matter how beautiful the room looks. What’s even more important is that it has the proper necessities for your guests— ample toilet paper supply, two or three hand towels, a trash can, soap (plus backup soap), and even possibly something to read.

7. Toss down a sheepskin
Luscious sheepskins, whether synthetic or the real deal, can instantly enhance the coziness of your home and make a major design statement. With its soft feel and exotic flair, sheepskin is a beautiful addition to any room that it’s in. In addition to providing lovely coverage to your floors, sheepskin rugs can also serve double duty as a warm throw blanket for a bed or sofa. If you’d like to layer in a bit more warmth, consider tossing a plush, luxe sheepskin over the back of a chair or on top of an area rug.
