7 Fresh Ways to Decorate with Shiplap

If you’re familiar with Joanna Gaines and her love of farmhouse style, then you’re probably familiar with shiplap as well. Although this grooved wooden board is nothing new, HGTV’s show Fixer Upper has certainly brought it front and center for its viewers. Even still, what you see on television is only a snippet of what can be done with it. So, let’s look at 7 fresh ways this versatile and charming material can be used in your home.

1. On a single wall. There’s no reason you have to fill an entire room with shiplap. Instead, consider using it on a single wall that you’d like to showcase. The wall behind your sofa or bed is ideal, as is the hallway or wall opposite the door in a dining room.  
2. In the mudroom. The mudroom is a hardworking space that deserves a little style. And what better way to achieve that than with beautiful shiplap walls? Some built-in cubbies will add to the charm while fulfilling the functional need within the space.  
3. In the kitchen. With the warmth and cheer they bring to a home, it’s no wonder farmhouse kitchens are so popular. Even if your home is newly built, shiplap in the kitchen can add that fresh farmhouse vibe you love.
4. On a vaulted ceiling. There’s something very appealing about a vaulted (pitched) ceiling, and shiplap is the perfect material to take that appeal to a whole new level. Creamy white shiplap up above will make the space feel open yet welcoming. Adding wooden beams–faux or the real deal–will add contrast and warmth.
5. In a finished basement. A finished basement adds both value and living space to your home. To keep it feeling as welcoming as the rest of the house, however, can be challenging. White shiplap walls can solve that problem easily by giving the space a light and airy feeling that matches the rest of your home.
6. In the laundry room. Looking for a way to make the chore of washing clothes a bit more fun? Shiplap can take care of that. It’ll be harder to look at laundry as a dreary task when the room looks so cheery. To keep with the theme, add vintage-styled shelving and accessories.
7. Partway up the wall. Just as you don’t have to cover an entire room in shiplap, you don’t have to cover an entire wall either. Consider using shiplap just as you would wainscoting, leaving the top portion of the walls available for paint or wallpaper.

Tip: Shiplap can be painted! Shiplap in color is just as charming in color as it does in white.
