These days, many of us are relying on our homes to provide just about everything: a place to eat, sleep, work, study, exercise, and of course, unwind. If 2020 taught us anything, it’s that home is important— and one that is both functional and comfortable is more essential than we ever realized.Â
So, with a new year ahead of us, why not resolve to make the changes to turn your home into a place that meets all of your needs? While some homes might require major work, many others can simply be altered with a simple decor refresh and a little creativity. Whatever would make your life easier, here are some suggestions to achieve a practical and cohesive style that allows you to meet the demands of life now, and in the future.Â
1. Define Spaces
If your home is serving as a hub for living, working, and learning, then no doubt, there’s a lot going on. This of course means that home can feel more overwhelming and less inviting. To minimize stress, take time to define spaces, and showcase their functions. It could mean a designated play area or reading nook for the kid in the corner of your home sectioned off with a fun rug and colorful storage ottomans. Or, it may mean a multipurpose piece of furniture that could double as a table and a desk.Â
2. Designate Tech-Free Zones
More time at home means more tech. And while we do live in a digital age, we can all benefit from unplugging every now and then. To make sure this happens, focus on having at least one or two soothing spaces in your home where you can disconnect, relax, and recharge— and yes, that includes television.Â
3. Create a Cozier Bedroom
As mentioned earlier, we need a retreat— and oftentimes, the best place for that is the bedroom. To create a bedroom retreat of your dreams, put a lot of focus on bringing in the cozy— more greenery, strategic lighting, upgraded bedding, etc. Need a jumping-off point? Start with a custom comforter or duvet cover and/or an upholstered headboard. Â
4. Experiment With Color, Patterns, and Texture
Sometimes all a home needs is a little color pick-me-up. Not only is this an easy way to breathe new life into a space, but it’s also fun! If you aren’t sure where to start, consider mixing prints within the same color family while varying textures for a trendy look. Or, paint or paper the walls. If you’re hesitant about covering all the walls, opt for an accent wall instead. You could even try to experiment with color in other ways like with an updated kitchen or bathroom backsplash.Â
5. Get Organized
With all that’s going on, it’s incredibly important to be organized. Consider a chalkboard panel to the side of your refrigerator to keep a running grocery or to-do list. Or, streamline your pantry by incorporating a combination of baskets and clear containers with lids. Maybe add some new shelving or even upgrade your mudroom. There are abundant possibilities when it comes to organization, so it should be easy to find something that works for your home and lifestyle.Â
