A new year means a new you— and while making resolutions for yourself can sometimes be challenging, resolutions for your home don’t have to be. In fact, we’re going to make it a lot easier for you. Below are 5 home decorating resolutions you can make—and actually keep! Whether you incorporate one or all, doing so will allow you to create a more personal, inviting space that is a home all your own.
1. Try a new hue.
Color can be scary— but the good news is that you don’t have to go all in to enjoy the fresh and fun vibe a new and interesting color can add to your home. There’s no need to nix those neutrals— simply use them as a backdrop for small hints of a new hue you’ve been wanting to try. Even the small and strategic pops of color on pillows, area rugs, or window treatments can create a sunny disposition.
Not sure what color to give a try? Consider starting with Classic Blue, Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2020, or one of the other fabulous seasonal colors.
2. Paint a piece of furniture.
Speaking of color, do you have an old dresser, chest, or side table that could use a new coat of paint? If so, here’s your chance to incorporate resolution #1 on this list— and you don’t have to be an expert to achieve good results! Don’t have anything to update but could use a new statement piece for your home? Consider yard sales and thrift shops when shopping around. Both are fabulous resources for finding furniture that needs to be sanded and painted.
3. Organize cluttered spaces.
The holidays can make things a little chaotic, which means things around the house often get overlooked. Not only is this the perfect time to clean up any clutter that has accumulated, but it’s also the perfect time to create a plan to keep clutter at a minimum from here on out. From adding more stylish storage solutions to simply purging unnecessary items, a more organized home is one that tends to be less stressful and more enjoyable.
4. Update the outdated.
Over time, things around the house become a little outdated. If that’s a situation you find your home in, there’s no better time than the present to give something in your home new life. Not sure where to start? Consider adding a stylish backsplash, hanging new window treatments, replacing light fixtures or countertops, or updating cabinets with fresh paint and new hardware.
5. Make a big statement in a small space.
A nice thing about small spaces is that they give us a decorating opportunity like no other. Small spaces are our wild cards, so to speak, in that they give us the freedom to do just about whatever we want in regards to decorating. Places like mudrooms, laundry rooms, and powder rooms are the perfect spots for something surprising— like wallpaper. Yes, wallpaper! Today’s wallpaper choices are nothing like the choices grandma had, leaving your decorating possibilities seemingly endless–so go for it!
