Yes, There IS a Difference Between Curtains and Drapes

Curtains and draperies are frontrunners when it comes to window treatment choices–and although they perform similarly, they aren’t the same thing. There are actually distinct differences between the two that are important for anyone interested in purchasing new window treatments for their home.

First, a little history about curtains and drapes…

Oriental cultures had used fabric for door and window decoration for several centuries but Western countries didn’t adopt the practice until the Middle Ages. At that time, only the rich could afford such fabric because of how expensive it was. However, during the 19th century, it became much more affordable for others due to mass production by machines. As glass windows became more common, the use of curtains and draperies increased, which brings us to today, where window treatments are used virtually everywhere.

The Difference

As mentioned above, curtains and drapes were designed to perform similarly, in that they cover windows. Both provide privacy, block light, regulate temperature and are used as a finishing touch in decorating. However, there are qualities about each that make them unique and different from one another.

Drapes are generally heavier in weight because they are lined. Additionally, their length is standard, meaning they always cover from ceiling (or top) to floor, meaning they are more formal and more expensive than your average curtain. Drapery panels are commonly used in spaces like dining rooms, living rooms and bedrooms. Patterns and fabric options are also much more plentiful than there are with curtains. One last big difference is that drapes are usually pleated, rather than gathered at the top.

Curtains are much lighter in weight and are generally found in rooms like bathrooms, kitchens and sometimes, over door windows. Curtains are used more for decorative purposes than they are for blocking light or soundproofing. The length of curtains also varies depending on how they are hung. If you are concerned about cost, curtains tend to be much less expensive than drapes.

Is one better than the other?

Not necessarily–it really just depends on your needs. Ultimately, homes can benefit from the use of curtains and drapes.
