Understanding Eclectic Design Style

Eclectic design is perfect for the homeowner that just can’t settle on a favorite style. The term eclectic was initially coined for the art world and presumably introduced to the world by Johan Joachim Winckelmann. Its philosophy was to combine elements or particular styles from different time periods and origins within a single project. This philosophy has flowed into the design world and can be described as the mixing together of a variety of styles through the use of color, texture, shape and finish. Here is a breakdown of how it works to come together as one piece of work:

Color

Although color plays a big role in pulling this style together, it’s best to keep a couple of neutrals in the mix. The point of neutrals is to keep the look grounded. Instead of looking chaotic with a variety of colors, there’s harmony created because there’s something there for balance. Without a grounding force, the design doesn’t really make sense.

Fabric

Whether it’s patterned, textured or a combination of both, fabric is a large component to an eclectic look. As mentioned earlier, it is always best to keep neutrals in the mix. In regards to fabric, use a neutral as the grounding force, adding colored textures and patterns, trims, tassels or fringe as you go.

Finish

Finish is what wraps the eclectic look up with a nice little bow. Where color didn’t close a gap is where finish comes into play. Finish can affect both furniture and accents, which allows you to articulate the particular design style when the colors weren’t able to do so.

Eclectic is Anything But Boring

One might think that the connecting factors that harmonize the design will make it seem boring. That is far from the case. Instead of becoming a boring space, the space transforms into something that reflects an interesting and eye-catching piece of art. With so many elements working together, the room becomes a stylish place worth talking about.

For optimal results, it is best to start with a bare framework, gradually adding pieces of color, fabric and finish, until the work is complete. Creating a finished piece of art, so to speak, isn’t necessarily easy. It will take effort, thoughtful planning and lots of creativity, but focusing on the three main components (color, fabric, finish) listed above, will allow you to pull together an eclectic look feeling too challenged.
