Designing Your Child’s Bedroom

You want your child to be comfortable, happy and safe in their personal space, so designing their bedroom can be quite challenging. A child’s room is often multi-functional: it’s a space for sleeping, for study, and for play, so it’s important to take all of that into consideration before you start designing. Here are some tips that will hopefully get you started in the right direction.

Question your child.

What better input can you get than from your child? Ask them what they like about their current bedroom, what they would change and what their favorite colors are. They will be the ones spending the most time in there so it only makes sense to hear their ideas. Granted what they suggest might not always be practical or in the budget, but asking them will make them feel involved.

Pick the theme or color scheme.

There’s bound to be a theme or character your child loves, but in most cases they’ll outgrow it quickly. Since this can pose a problem, using a color scheme tends to work best. As a general rule, pick one main color and two accent colors. You can build on those colors by incorporating complimentary patterns throughout the furniture, window coverings and bedding.

Furnish the room.

There are so many great pieces of furniture out there for a child’s bedroom, so before you buy, be sure you have a good sense of what will work in your child’s space. Take the time to measure the space so you don’t overcrowd or under-furnish the room.

Add art to the walls.

Most children love art just as much as adults do. If you can’t find any great prints to frame, consider removable wall decals. If you’re artistic and are feeling really creative, paint a mural on one wall.

Lighten the space.

Don’t forget about the lighting. Not only will it allow your children to see better, but it can become a fun, decorative element. Be sure there’s a central light and then consider a desk or floor lamp for function or just to tie the room together.

Include plenty of storage.

Most kids have a lot of things books, toys, clothes, shoes the list goes on. This is why sufficient storage is a must. Storage these days doesn’t just mean storing things in a closet. Your child’s room can be organized with bins on bookcases, a nightstand or bed with drawers, toy boxes and even window benches with built in storage. Today, your options are endless, so find out what you have the space for and get creative with it.

Your ultimate goal is to provide a space your child will love, so above all else, make the space reflects his or her personality. It doesn’t take much to make the most of your child’s space, so have fun!
