Easy Decorating Updates Using Fabric

Giving your home a new look doesn’t have to take a lot of time or a lot of money. Sometimes all it takes is some fun fabric and a weekend to get a new project accomplished— and visiting a fabric store like Fabric Resource is a wonderful way to track down the exact style you want. Whether you have scraps of fabric lying around or are planning to stock up on a few yards of a favorite, here are some easy decorating updates that anyone can tackle.

Fabric Covered Corkboards

Now, more than ever, we’re seeing a surge in spaces that need to serve double-duty for work or school. That means there’s likely a corkboard nearby. The good news is you don’t have to use those boring brown corkboards anymore. Instead, try dressing one up with fabric to give it a personal touch. Look for patterned tea towels around the house or buy some fabric pieces large enough to wrap around a cork bulletin board. Cover the front of the board with spray adhesive and add the fabric, smoothing out air bubbles as you go. Wrap the fabric around the sides and staple it in place. You’re all set!

Patterned Wall Hangings

Taking on a bold pattern in your home can be a little unnerving if you’ve never done so before. Fortunately, there are several other ways that you can still get that pop of pattern without making a huge commitment. If there’s a bold patterned fabric you love but aren’t sure how to use it, consider framing it for the wall!

To make it happen, find three frames you like (or make your own) in any size, remove the glass, adhere the fabric to the backs of the frames with spray adhesive, and reassemble. Voila! You’ve got yourself a personalized and eye-catching wall accessory.

Another option is to make hanging panels. Instead of framing the fabric and hanging it right on the wall, attach the fabric to canvases or plywood. Staple a sturdy piece of ribbon or rope to the panel backs and hang them on hooks.

Updating drapes is a sure way to create a major impact. Nothing says fresh like refreshed window coverings!

Trendy “Headboards”

It’s no secret that a beautiful headboard can really elevate the look of your bed and honestly, your bedroom in general. While headboards can be a beautiful thing, they aren’t the only way to dress up your bed. A creative way to incorporate fun patterns is by creating fabric panels or window frames to place behind or above the head of your bed.

To create fabric panels, stretch fabric pieces over three artist’s canvases. You can spray adhesive or just pull it taut and then staple the fabric edges to the back. Hang the panels or set them on the floor so they lean against the wall, spacing them out to where they are in line with the width of your bed.

Window frames are another alternative. Not only are they easy to make, but they can also give your room a creative new look. Look for two frames that when hung side by side, would measure about the width of your bed. Replace the glass with pieces of cut fiberboard to fit each section of the frame. Adhere your fabric choices (have fun and mix patterns) with spray adhesive, install the fiberboard pieces and then hang them above your bed.

Lovely Lighting

Have a perfectly working lamp or chandelier you want to keep, but think it needs updating? Give it new life with a fabric change. Take the current shade fixture or buy a new one and cover it with an updated pattern that makes you smile.

Have random scraps of fabric laying around? Use a wire lampshade frame and create an adorable lampshade by piecing together the fabric scraps around it.

Perfect Pillow Covers

Create a collection of comfy, eye-catching pillows by making some covers for them. Pick out some fabric and have them custom-made. Handy enough with a needle and thread that you can make them yourself? Even better!

To really elevate the comfort level, opt for using an old wool sweater or throw, cutting them to the desired size and stitching it into a pillow cover. After cutting, use a no-fray product on the edges to prevent raveling. Insert a pillow form and hand-stitch the cover closed.

Chair Reupholstery

General wear and tear are bound to happen on furniture— especially on items like cushioned dining chairs that get a lot of use. When this happens, don’t toss those chairs out. Instead, give the seat cushion a facelift!

Start by removing the seat and back (if there is one) and then remove the old fabric. Next, attach the new fabric, finishing it off with a nice pleat that will meet on the backside to be stapled into place. Apply any finishing touches and then reattach the pieces.
