Getting the Most Out of Your Window Treatments

Window treatments are essentially the icing on the cake. Not only are they functional, but they also tie everything together within the space. However, knowing what to do (and what not to do) in regards to window treatment, will help you get the most out of them. Let’s take a look at some basic do’s and don’ts when it comes to window treatments.

Do: Think through colors and patterns carefully. Since window treatments are one of the most visible things in the space, it’s highly important that you take time to think through colors and patterns. Consider the space as a whole and think about what will truly complement all the other items in the room. You don’t want to overdo it to the point where it looks as though the window treatments have completely taken over the space.

Don’t: Forget the hardware. While hardware may not rank as high as the window treatments themselves, it is a close second. In fact, the wrong hardware can make even the prettiest window treatments look flat out wrong. Rods and finials should suit the fabric you choose (i.e. large, decorative rods for heavy material and daintier rods for lightweight fabrics). Be sure the material matches the room as well (i.e. match metals and woods to other common metals and woods).

Do: Focus intensely on fabric. As with upholstery, fabric for window treatments should suit the room they’ll be in. Have a high-traffic family room? Stick with something durable and easy-to-clean like cotton. Need extra warmth and privacy? Opt for a thicker fabric such as velvet.

And it’s not just about the fabric the lining should be taken into consideration as well. A basic cotton lining is excellent in most cases, but there are times when something different is needed. For instance, if you need extra protection from heat or extreme cold, then a lining meant to insulate will be perfect. If you require to keep the room extra dark during certain times of the day, opt for a blackout lining.

Don’t: Skimp on the details. Decorative details can elevate your window treatments to a whole new level. It doesn’t matter if you go with something simple like fringe, or something more extensive like tassels; trim is worth considering.
