Fall 2014 Color and Trend Watch

Summer is coming to a close, which means it’s time to start looking to what’s hot in home deign this fall. From colors to trends, here’s your guide for the season ahead.

Colors

Pantone has released their fall fashion color report for fall 2014, which means many of these colors (or ones similar in nature) will also find their way into the home. The 10 hot colors of the season are Royal Blue, Aluminum, Aurora Red, Misted Yellow, Sangria, Mauve Mist, Cognac, Bright Cobalt, Cypress and Radiant Orchid, which was named Pantone’s color of the year.

If most of these colors don’t seem quite fall-like, you’re right. According to Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, it’s a season of “untypical colors more reflective of the imagination and ingenuity, which makes for an artful collection of colors and combinations not bound by the usual hues for fall.”

And that’s okay. While these aren’t the traditional fall hues we’re used to, they do help broaden the palette, giving homeowners more options when it comes to transitioning into the new season.

Trends

While most trends do come and go, some are worth keeping. Here are some trends to keep an eye out for. Perhaps one or more will be the perfect fit for your home.

• Texture-rich accessories and fabrics: Pillows and throws are a good place to start.
• Brass: From finishes on lighting to faucets and accessories. Will it be the new black?
• Wood grain: wood treatments on walls, reclaimed pieces, etc.
• Lighter woods: Honey-colored walnut, oak and cherry will be some top picks
• Mixed materials: beautiful blends of natural materials like stone, glass and metal
• Compact lighting and/or industrial lighting: Small is in and Edison-style bulbs are the way to go
• Mixed styles: Eclectic is making its way to the forefront
• Natural stone: Decorative boxes, lighting, vases and other accessories
• Geometrical shapes: Can be incorporated via fabric or accessories
• Diagonal lines: From slanted wood to chevron patterns, diagonal is where it’s at
• Color blocks: On fabrics or wall art, color blocks and brush strokes will be popular
• Animal accessories: Dog, cats, safari animals and everything in between
